Asus P4C800 E deluxe

Anyone got an opinion on this board? I'm considering a purchase.

Hi

this is a great mobo. However few things you need to look at as tweeks in this good mainboard.

make sure you got XP in standard mode (press F5 during installtion when you are prompted to Press F6 to install a SCSI device)

BIOS:

1. disable the onboard sound
2. disable the hyper threading
3. disable RAID
4. diable plug and play
5. don't hook up all the USB's a they take resources. this mainboard come with 8xUSB's and I don't think you need all of them.

If you are going to use any Sony sonic Vegas/ACID you need to disable the onboard promise controller too as these 2 conflict software wise. (you won't be able to burn CD. System crashes until you disable promise controller.)

Thanks for the reply, antar. I'm curious why you suggest standard mode for XP - I thought ACPI was the new "standard". Is there some more reference you can steer me to?

thats wrong!
you need to install acpi for latest mainboards!

in all deluxe-versions, there are no free irqs!
(they are reserved for all this onboard-devices)

better go for non deluxe and get what you need as pci-card...

Andre - what board (Asus) do you recommend? I have no need for onboard Audio, Raid, etc, would just disable them (in BIOS if possible). The "non-deluxe" P4C800 appears to have all these bells&whistles - matter of fact, according to Asus' site, I don't see any difference between deluxe - not deluxe. You got any suggestions?

Many posts here suggest Standard mode for XP.
However only on dual CPU you need ACPI.

I am sure if you ask around here on the forum as well CW themselves they will suggest standard mode.

But then again that was my openion. I have 3 machines with winXP pro in standard mode and they all work like as charm.

Maybe Andre know something I don't know.

can you prove what some web dude says on the RME website?

does this really work in practice??

in theory every thing should work as microspft says. And no one should touch Standard mode. I am sure if you call microsoft and ask them what is standard mode they will tell you not to touch it.

I configured the P4C800E Deluxe 2 weeks ago in standard mode with 3.2 gig P4 with Sata drivers and 1 gig of Kingston RAM and 128 meg of RAM Nvidea video card and 450 Watt Powersupply

ALL in standard mode and works like a clock.

Thanks for the input Andre & antar.

For the record, I've been running XP with ACPI on a P4B533 board and it's been flawless with 2 CW boards and a scsi card in the PCI slots.
I'm getting a new MB because of the ram limitations on the P4B. I'll go for the Asus P4C800 deluxe model cause it's the only one available in my town.
I haven't found any convincing info regarding ACPI problems with this board, so I'll go ahead with that mode.

The only troublesome reports for the Asus 800 boards concerns the midi active sensing problems related in this forum. I'm hoping CW will address this. Hope I don't regret this purchase.

I would definitely run in ACPI mode unless you have hassles, which I doubt you will have. I have an ASUS P4P 800 deluxe and it works fine.

thats right!

and if you are using n2/sx2:
there is NO hyperthreading support in standard-pc-mode!

our systems are running with hyperthreading and acpi like a clock

(check out our hamburg-audiopc configuration for more details)

I am certainly no expert, but my gut feeling is to first run it in acpi mode and see how well it works. If everything is fine then don't mess with it and if you do alter it first make an image of your C: drive!

First, your board is an exelent choise, I have the P4PE, which is its predecesor, and it wokrs perfectly well, as it works for many other audio guys out there.

Absolutely ACPI; I have it, Garyb and atOmic as well, and we all are having exelet results. It is complex for me to remember all the reasons, but when I built my new system, I understood clearly that ACPI is much better than PC, there are many hidden advantages and it should be faster in performance too, as well as more relyable.

You actually can desable those extras in the BIOS, no problem. I did and they don't bother you.

From what I'm understanding about this motherboard, a lot of things are onboard. I'm limited when it comes to computer knowledge, but could I easily disable some of those in the bios and just put in my own audio card and video card?

I also got the P4PE, and intended to install as standard PC, but due to the fact that I used S-ATA drives, it gave me no choice during install. (F6 to install S-ATA drivers)
Since this works....it's the way it gonna be.
(although my card share IRQ with gLAN)
