I would luuuvv SFP on amiga. Though I suffer no delusions that I'll ever see it.
Saw the new amiga OS4 (pre-beta) running on the new A1 motherboard just a couple of days ago at a roadshow. It is fast even at pre-beta! Boot time < 10 secs (people I was speaking to were saying about 6 secs) and thats using PIO mode and not udma. There were a couple of mac heads there. They were saying booting Mac OSX on Debian on the A1 board (G4 933) is much faster than booting OSX on an actual Mac! This was demonstrated at the show. They were also saying that OSX also runs faster on top of debian on the A1 than the equivalent Mac hardware. Very interesting!

Long time no be here. How are we all?

Just thought that I should raise this...

Are we all aware that XP is just Win NT 5.1?? MS have even verified this. I should also point out that the differences between a fully patched/SP'd Win2k and XP Pro are purely cosmetic.

John I've had W2K on my DAW for a couple of years now and have had no need to step up to Ex Pee. You should certainly experiment with it yourself first before paying the MS tax.

John,

Remember the invaluable thread about emulated midi ports in Cubase SX.

I just built a nice ASUS/Wintel machine. I use XP pro edition and SX 2.0 and love it. I did not tweak my Windows yet because I figure if it aint broke why fix it?

I was under the impression that XP handles MIDI better than 2K.

Hey Guys,

I should give you guys an update!

I settled on XP Pro, as a friend of mine basically gave me his license since he's not using it.

I was stunned by how smoothly the changeover went. Installing XP was a breeze. Running thru the basic tweaks to turn off all the graphic whizbangs, etc, didn't take long, and to my amazement- everything is just as snappy as Win98SE.

Coming from Win98SE, I fully expected my machine to get bogged down by XP. But, it looks like I can wait a little longer to update hardware-- my trusty P3 1ghz, Intel D815eea, 512mb ram, separate hard disks for apps and audio. It's doing just fine.

Cubase SX 2.01, MIDEX 8, Wavelab and Halion, then SFP 3.1c, all installed and worked first time. Reinstalling Emagic LAP 4.8.1 on the other hand did not work at all, until I called Emagic (now Apple!), and they sent me a CD installer "Volume 13 CD" which allowed me to install 4.8.1 on XP and get back to some of my old data.

Overall, I'm *extremely* happy, and wish I'd done this sooner. I'm really liking SX, and all my tools seem to be working happily together.

One more detail: my impression is that XP starts up way faster than Win2k. (My development machine is Win2k on a P4 1.7ghz, and takes muuuch longer to start up!)

Thanks again to all those who gave me advice here!

It's good that you are getting into Cubase at a time when it finally doesn't suck. Because of advances in hardware, OS, SFP and in Cubase. I can now use my computer without it bombing every 10 minutes like it did 6 years ago.
