Do you agree to my new PC components?

This time a completly crash hits me.
I have to buy new PC components.

I´ll change from AMD/VIA AthlonXP 1800+ to a Intel P4 system.

My desicion:

Mobo = Intel D875PBZ(LK)(whatever LK means)
CPU = P4 2.8GHz 800FSB (in a box)
RAM = 2x (for dual ram mode) 256MB Corsair
DIMM DDR400 (PC3200)

OS will be WinXP Pro to take advantage of upgrading to more than 512MB RAM.

I hope that I can still use my existing drives.

Is this a good decision? The price today was around 576€, my limit is 600€.

I recommend 2x 512mb RAM (or 512 now, double it later).

The intel 875 seems not to have a measurable advantage to 865 for us (so I've read in the c't magazine). So, if you buy a barely naked 865, you could economise a few bucks and put them into more ram.

You can see my thread a few down on this forum. I bought this system over the weekend just passed.

I ended up buying:

* P4 2.6c
* Asus P4P800 rev 2.0 (865 board, hard to find now)
* Corsair TwinX 2x512mb 3200LL (1gb ram)
* Seagte 120gb 7200rpm, 8mb buffer, SATA HHD (AUDIO, Gigastudio files)
* WD 40gb 7200rpm, 8mb buffer (programs)

So far it's rock soild, no problems whatsoever! And I have not been able to push this system to the limit as of yet! Although I have only been using it for under a week and am still testing. But at this stage it owns!

I'm using Scope 3.1c, Cubase SX, Gigastudio 96. All at the same time =

. One happy camper!

Anyways that's me. I suggest running Dual ram if you can 2x512 would be nice.

Something I have learnt over the years. It is better to get a fast barebones motherboard. As is the case with this system. For a start why pay for stuff you are going to disable. Also there will be much fewer conflicks if ANY of a barebones mobo. (note: these comments have only surfaced to me this week. I used to like Dlx boards so i'd have more options. Now with this new setup. It finally made more sence to not go there.)

I'm sorry for your crash, but you know, sometimes this means to go farther... and it seems this is what it means for you!

Well, I agree completely with Dark here, get a 512 instead of two 256, DON'T waist your slots, they are few and you will finally lose rather than economize money.

The general choice is very good.

Unless your drives are broken, I don't see why they shoudn't work with your new system.

Nestor, the board he's refering to uses "dual-channel" ddr ram, so it has to be split in two blocks...

Thank you for your help on that. You´re right about the RAM, to buy 2 256MB instead of one 512 is not logic but I want to use the dual RAM mode. Maybe I can sell my old RAM and CPU to free up some bucks for two 512MB modules.
About the Mobo, I´ve read many tests about the D875PBZ and it becomes to something like a reference board, very solid and fast. But the most important on that, I have a good feeling with this board and I´ll follow my intention.
I´ll order the components today or tomorrow so that they can reach me within this week. Then I have to build them together and install all programs again.

If the force will be with me, everything should be recovered in the middle of next week.
Damn, I only want to make music, you know.

Dual-channel RAM motherboards DO NOT *necessarily* have to have two sticks of RAM in order to run: they just run slightly better with them (more memory bandwidth).

Beware of minimizing ram now and upgrade later, because a lot of boards don't like all ram-slots occupied. Most of them tend to run a lot more stable with just one pair of ram.
