Was I hacked ?

My DAW has no virus protection or firewall. I connected tonight to update a piece of software...

I had my "password" text fle open (since I needed to log into the company site), and was happily downloading (on dialup) when suddenly my machine reboots !

Is this "just" the blaster or do you think maybe someone got my password file. Is there any way to tell ?

This really made my heart thump ! Now I have gone the whole way and installed all my security software on this machine (mainly a DAW...)

That can have several reasons.
Sometimes a PC does stupid or simply not to understandable things.
It can also be that the blaster have you.
I recommand you to install a antivirus program and check your hard drives and memory.
And yes, it can be that you got hacked, in that case you´ve to inform the company to get a new password.
For future surfs with your DAW you should install a firewall!
The best way to recover your system is that you make backups or better images from your system. Once your system is infected you can recover everything in a short time.
The internet is a dangerous place, isn´t it?

I installed Norton security and it alerted me to dll.exe trying to dial up.

That enabled me to track down the problem to "only" the W32.Welchia.Worm....

Used Symantec's removal tool and all seesm to be OK now.

The net's sure getting nasty. Can't leave home without my flak jacket and concealed weaponry

But I wonder how common it is to not just pick up a virus or a worm, but for a real human to take control of your machine and look at files ? Passwords, documents, that kind of thing.

Anyone have any information or links ?

I have no such information, and I would be highly suspicious to sources of such information. My impression is, that hacker risks towards private users are highly over emphasized - but it keeps McAffee and Symantecs numbers in the black.

beleive me.the us(!) govt has self-legalised looking at EVERYTHING that happens on the net(read the "patriot act").the organization in charge of such behavior is called darpa.it is not secret.i'm sure that no one HERE would have a problem because of that fact,but computers connected to the net(!),are never 100% secure.a firewall is a good idea though,so is a spyware/adware stopper like spybot.also,a program like spywareblaster will keep the machine clean.basic stuff i know,i just thought i'd type it.

When you start the M....soft media player it tries to connect to the internet. Same with the Real One player, my firewall always spots up,why? What informations will be send, your playlists maybe?
Why my IE tries to connect, when I start it
from time to time, directly to a M....soft page?
Same with the DivX player, when you install it you´ll get a spyware program too, the gain trickler file, it made me much troubles the last weeks and slowed down my
connection. Why companies spread their products with spyware?

I trust nobody in the net and you´ve to be very carefull. Companies or organisations want to trace everything down you´ve installed, want to watch play or use. We all should become glassy, let me say controled.

For me the best way to secure things is to connect to the net thru a DSL router with built-in firewall. No-one can get inside of my LAN. Furthermore, I did NOT install Internet Explorer, Media Player and all the other Microsoft crap. I'm running SFP, Logic and FL on a very minimal 98lite setup, and got myself the Opera browser to occasionally visit Planetz from my DAW.
This works for now, but support for Win98 will vanish in the near future, meaning new mobo's and chipsets will not be supported anymore by this windows version.
But: as long as my mobo (i850 chipset) lives, I will not migrate to XP.

There are a lot of good sites about this proboem. Just surf around and get those sites related to products information, reviews, etc., and you'll find planty of information.

You can always get in touch with great people like the Panda Team, in Spain, they have created a fantastic too called Panda Antivirus, it is one of the best, and it is certainly much better than Norton itself because it scans the WHOLE system every time.

They can provide you every two or three days, via mail, all the information of the latest problems and dangers in virus, worms, etc., it worth a try.

I'm rather amazed a guy like you, working all the time related to the net, is without an antivirus or a firewall, I strongly recomend you to start using them, even if you don´t like them... It's like washing your teeths every day, you don't like it but its truly necesary.

you cant be to careful with your creative machine, a few months ago (when i was using win ME) a virus merrily started toasting every EXE file on there, its not even connected to the internet, but apparently my XP box, though imune itself, was not immune to spreading the thing to other machines on the network.

now i just leave the antivirus going and as for the small performance loss, suck it up and laugh because most of the work is done on DSP
