Which is the correct speed for my CPU?
Mine is Pentium 4 2.4B Northwood

Everybody says different things, some tells you 80C*, while others tells you 69C*. The point is, how much hit can it stand overcloking it?

Do not overclock. You are not ready for it yet. It should stay below 60 degrees IMO.

BTW: Don't worry, I will not for the moment... I too know I'm not ready for it. This is for real geeks, isn't it?

I just wanted to know about it, cos I'm getting into BIOS and could see it's so "apparently" easy to do so.

I don't think this link is the Northwood, but it will give you a good idea. 71°C is the max operating temperature. Values of around 38-45°C are most common...

Mine at idle is running at about 40-44C*. Never pushed it yet, cos I coudn't even install XP yet.

Max temperature for Northwood B cores is 75C. Remember that the p4 uses thermal throtling meaning that if a higher temp is reached it will keep working but it will slow the clockspeed down in order to decrease the outputted heat.

NorthWood are very rather sensitive to heat, so we should not speed them much, I've read a lot about it, and there are too many bad experiencies. Beware.

You'll probably find a utility on MB cd.
For ASUS P4PE its called PC Probe.
There are also a lot of freeware u can use.

My new MOBO checks it for me, I just go to the BIOS and can see the temperature of the MOBO, which is always about 16 to up to 20C*, and it shows you the CPU too.
