Powering up for the first time, WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

I’m going to be powering up very soon, as soon as I know what I have to do when powering up… he he…

Which is the fist step I have to fulfil now? Is it the formatting of the HD drives?

just kidding.
just start it up and see if it posts and idles...

then you can start installing the os.

be sure that you've cleaned up possible causes of shorts.(screws,screwdrivers,connectors with metal exposed etc.)

smile if it runs,kick it(gently)if it doesn't.......

Well, yes, I already did it, I’ve taken great care of all the cables, have put them together out of the way of the fans tiding them up together, using special tape for electricity cables.

But… and this may sound bizarre to you: what the heck is “Post and Idle”. In the dictionary “idle” means “not to work” should I stop working to boot up my system for the first time? Aren’t you being a bit excessive in your lack of orthodoxy?

Now, seriously, what is it?

"idle",as in what an automobile engine does while it sits there on.(as opposed to thereon)

before you can try to install the os(setup will partition and format the drives),you want to see it run with no apps so that you can make sure that there are no strange post beeps(meaning bad ram,mis-set jumpers etc.).

if there is no burning smell/smoke/fire/explosion,you can restart the computer and set the bios.then restart and begin installing the os.(xp right?)

POST is power-on-self-test. It's the screen you get when you switch the machine on which tests the RAM and shows what CPU and motherboard you have, detects the IDE devices etc.

By the way, didn't you know http://www.google.com knows way more than the dictionary now?

I'll tell you soon what has happend, and were I am... It's so exiting, but, can't hide I'm a bit nervous too, it's my first time... huffffff!!!

The first time's a little messy and embarassing, but after you get your rhythm and learn how to pace yourself, you can install OSes for 5+ hours straight! Deep breaths, practice your multiplication tables.

ZEUS is alive... I REALLY HOPE THERE'S SOMEBODY ONLINE RIGHT NOW... I have just booted up for the first time, 10 minutes ago... Well, everything seems to run allright, but there are no bips whatsoever, and the screen shows no messages at all, the POST does not tell me anything either... What can I do please?

Well, this is what I call “a frustrating day”… I did everything I had to do and double-checked all the connexions so I just know they are right, before powering up for the first time.

When powering up, the green (blue in the Thremaltake) light lighted correctly, and the red led for HDD activity lighted up as well… I would say there is sort of a small bip at the very beginning, but it’s so imperceptible, that I can’t really say it’s there… it seems more an electric contact beginning it’s electricity transference, that’s it.

NO POST from the P4PE, absolutely nothing. There are no bips to tell me something is wrong, nore any voice telling me something is badly connected. The screen is black and shows nothing either. It is properly connected and powered up as well. I can nevertheless switch it off, by holding for more than 4 seconds, so in a way, the system is responding to powering up and down… but nothing else. I’ve double checked all the connexions again, and gently pressed possible bad connexions into their respective places, searching fixing something, whatever it may be.

The 5 fans run perfectly well, the power supply too, the HDs I know are running as well cos they are slightly hot. The P4 CPU fan is also running. The Thermaltake temperature clock shows with perfection the temperature of the board, BTW, the temperature is 21”.

I’ve powered it on and off, several times… I took the video card out and put it back, on the yearning it was this the problem, but it wasn’t. In fact, if the MOBO does nothing, i.e. gives me no answer whatsoever, it could be precisely, a MOBO problem…

Please, those of you with knowledge about these topics, help me out of this trouble, I really am worry, I have not a clue, either more money to replace anything at all…

Try holding the "del" key while booting (or whatever key your motherboard uses to open BIOS). If your screen remains blank, it may be a video problem - maybe even a faulty cable. Do you have an alternate monitor to try?

And if that doesn't work, maybe press Delete repeatedly while you boot.

And if that doesn't work, try and push the graphic card further into the AGP port. I have seen on several ocasions, that such cards realy need to be just in place. Even if you can not push it one milimeter more, it still may help - worth a try anyway.
