Do not use Microsoft's Regclean, which is for download on their site: Regclean dates from before ASIO (it's made for Win95, go figure) and will kill your ASIO.

Preventive, I do not install programs that won't have a long run on the machine (demo's, shareware), programs that spy on you or contain advertisement. I won't ever install Quicktime, Realplayer or Kazaa again, unless they get major revisions -which I'm not expecting.

Browsing the web, some garbage still accumulates on your machine. I get this of with Spybot, which is told to find more garbage than its popular counterpart Ad-Aware.

I used some registry cleaners before, but ran into problems with them, so I don't use them anymore. If there's some safe-to-use software (RegCleaner maybe?), I'll be glad to read that below.

I see, very interesting... But, don't we need Quicktime to run some important programs? Don't they use it? I'm perpahs wrong.

i have VERY good luck with this one: http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm

as with any such program, you use it at your own risk, but i have NEVER had this program remove vital info.(unlike m$'s regclean)

the cleaning action is reversable.

Hi Nestor,

you won't need Quicktime unless you want to view quicktime-format movies (*.mov files).

be very careful with free software downloaded from the net, they take advantage of people who aren't that technically-inclined (I see this every day in my job, which is like 'count-the-trojans' sometimes), and in most cases aren't very compatible with a performance-oriented system like a Creamware system.

In most cases if in doubt, do not install, or make a Ghost/DriveImage backup before you do. An image backup is THE safest way to get back to previous configs - MS System restore is the first thing I disable in XP, and I do not recommend any automated cleanup/tweaking program to anyone, as they can and will misbehave.

registry cleaners are for after uninstalls or other changes that leave artifacts behind.easycleaner only removes entries that point nowhere.

I've just tried one, but never done any surgical important cut into my system. I guess the more you do, years and years of use must end by making your system slow as donkey...

It's not difficult to understand the Image way it's the very best you can do, as it is explained by Dark. THis is the one I'm going to chose to do myself so... But, again, WHICH IS THE BEST PROGRAM for taking images of your primary HD?

I've used Symantec Ghost and Powerquest Drive Image Pro, they both do the same thing essentially. Drive Image may be a marginally better way to go, since it uses a very easy Windows interface (although I haven't used a very recent version of Ghost so I don't know how it may have improved).
