Hi,
why is the sound of a soundfont file loaded into sts 3000 so bad ?
There is a big difference of quality to a
soundfont compatible soundcard like the
emu aps i used before.
Thanks
STS - Soundfonts
Yes, I was severly dissapointed after changing over.
The reason for the quality difference is that soundfonts are not really a very open format they are very much Creative specific, so its hard to tweak the sts samplers to play as good.
I did have some albeit limited success with programs such as chicken systems translator to convert the progs to sts format.
But then I discovered the world of AKAI sample cd's and left soundfonts behind forever.

Add life to your days, not days to your life.
I used Soundfonts almost exclusively for a number of years... before I got a real soundcard and moved on up to the STS.
Now, in context (ie imbedded in an arrangement) the sounds I use, to be honest don't sound any worse in the STS4000 than they did on my SoundBlaster Live! I'm using French Horns and Jazz Traps for one song, and both sit rather well, and have even fooled my 'real' horn-playing brother.
Perhaps you were listening to the soundfonts on the sound card POST FX? Remember, there were lots of fancy processing that could be applied on SoundBlaster systems, such as 'loudness' and 'stereo boost' and 'real crappy reverb' and the like... well you get what I mean.
BTW, oes anyone know of AKAI (STS) compatible sample CD's available over the net; specifically solo orchestral instruments?
