3x PCI Card PC Build Win11 LGA1851 265k i7ultra

Post by freaked5 »

Hi,

i just want to share my new PC build with my 2 Pulsar2 and 1 Luna 6 DSP cards on a brand new hardware, I hope for some people, this will help. Upgrading from win10 to win11 without loosing the DAW and plugins.

1x INTEL Core Ultra i7 265K
1x GIGABYTE B860 DS3H ATX
1x be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 CPU cooler
2x 32GB (2x16GB) KINGSTON FURY Beast DDR5-6
1x be quiet! Pure Power 12m 1000 Watt
3x StarTech.com PCIe to PCI Low Profile Adapter card- 1 x PCI-e (plug) 1 x PCI (slot)
6x Crucial BX500 SATA SSD 1TB, 2,5"
1x PCIE X1 Riser cable Dual 90°
1x M.2 NGFF NVMe M Key to PCIE 3.0 4X Extension Cable
16x High Speed 6Gbps SATA 3 cable 1m
1x 16-Port PCIe X1 SATA controller
1x 4-Pin Molex Y 30cm
1x 4-Pin Molex and FDD

reused GPU and case ;)

Running win11 and scope7 all work fine so far.

TLTR:

Choosing the Right Hardware:

The first challenge I faced was the motherboard—there are no consumer boards that offer 3 PCI slots or enough PCIe slots (I needed 5). The only options were expensive industrial boards, so I had to decide which platform to go with: 1700, 1851, or one of the industrial boards I found.

After spending hours analyzing my options in Excel, I decided on:

CPU: Intel i7-265K
RAM: 64GB
Storage: 1TB
Power Supply: 1000W
PCIe to PCI Adapters: 3
Motherboard: Gigabyte DS3H (without Wi-Fi) – the only affordable board that met my needs (with some compromises). Thankfully i found this :)

The newly purchased hardware cost around €1500. I also needed additional components:

Riser cables, spacers, and screws
CPU cooler
16-port SATA controller
6x 1TB SSDs
Long SATA cables

I reused my old GTX 1080 graphics card, a 1TB NVMe drive from my previous system, my case, and some power cord splitters to run the PCI adapter cards (3x Molex) along with my 16 SSDs.

Testing the New System: "Never change a running system!" 🙂

After backing up everything, I cloned my old system onto a spare 1TB NVMe to attempt booting Windows 10 on the new hardware. Blue screen error! 😲 I was disappointed, so I attempted a system recovery from a disk image, which also failed.

But to my surprise, the system eventually booted! That gave me confidence that Windows 10 would run, so I proceeded with the next steps:

Removed the PCI cards and installed them in the test rack.

Adjusted settings and configurations.

Discovered that one PCIe slot wasn't working because it was shared. The compromise was to losing 16 SSDs from a second controller that was planned

Rearranged the components to ensure everything fit:
3 PCI cards
1 SATA controller
1 GPU (2-slot) plus breakout line from the Luna card

Final Testing and System Setup:

After running all the tests, I started Scope 7 to check if all the cards were recognized and in the correct order. Then came the big question—could I use my existing Storage Pool, or would I need to copy back 4TB of data?

After verifying all behaviors and configurations, I was confident everything was working properly. That meant I could swap my Windows 10 NVMe SSD into the new build without issues.

With that reassurance, I started the next phase:

Disassembling my old PC, carefully breaking it down piece by piece.
Cleaning every corner of the case, ensuring dust and debris wouldn’t cause problems in my new setup.
Beginning the rebuild, putting everything together in its final form.

and it boot and work realy good.

Last step was after installing every MB driver, the final push to win11.

To my surprise, after three failed attempts with Windows updates 😠, I decided to use a Windows 11 24H2 installation USB stick—and it finally worked! 😃

Now i am listening a FL8 song that i made 2007 with all 32 bit plugins working

cheers!

Hi @freaked5 Great to see you got this working as no one had seemed to post experience with PCIe-PCI adapters
I have built a New Win 11 PC also but so far No scope.

I've been running a fanless streacom FC10 case for a decade and have limited the cpu of this new build to long and short term power to 65 Watts
1x INTEL Core Ultra i7 265
1x GIGABYTE B860M DS3H
2x 32GB Gskill DDR5-6
1x Streacom fanless 24W powersupply
1x StarTech.com PCIe to PCI Low Profile Adapter card
1x M.2 NVMe 1Tb Os drive
1x M.2 NVMe 4Tb Date drive
Large Data amounts off loaded to Unraid server

Scope Luna II
Adat Z-Link Expander
A16 Ultra
SCOPE 5.1
Win 11 pro

However I cannot get this Setup working. My old build was win 10 and worked but it was too slow for me.
The scope install finds the Scope card but i get 2 errors.
Error:0x800b0101
Error: InstallDriver returned-2
I've tried to install in all 4 PCIe slots.
Maybe its just scope version 5.1?
