This is a message I got from Nvidia concerning their PCI bus performance on the new nForce2 chipset.

The problems we had with the PCI was fixed a while back through a BIOS update. The nForce or Nforce 2 shouldn't experience the problems you noted with Via chipsets. The problem has also been fixed by Via on their Via KT400 chipset. None of their previous chipsets contain this fix since it was due to lacking a hardware component. I have not tested the KT400 to verify it has this fix however.

Thank You,

Here is a review of the nforce2 on tomshardware.com
http://www.tomshardware.com/mainboard/0 ... index.html

"...HyperTransport has the added advantage of being able to work isochronously - NVIDIA calls this feature "StreamThru." This means that data transfer can happen in real time (iso = equal, chronos = time), where the access for an uninterrupted datastream is guaranteed by the chipset (per Single-Step Arbiter of the nForce2). This is particularly important for applications that rely on constant datastreaming (e.g., CD recording, video editing, hard disk recording)."

The PCI stuff is a <a href=http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic ... >repost</a> (and <a href=http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic ... &1>here</a>) but nice for those that may have missed it..

nForce2 looks pretty cute with the FireWire on some of the models, dual lan possibilities..

nForce is my personal choice for chipsets on the AMD platform at this time.

Yeah my Nforce MKI board arrives tomorrow morning, so will be putting that through its paces when my crucial memory comes.

Did you read that bit about how Athlon XP's cannot take advantage of the extra memory bandwidth nf2 provides, so we wait with baited breath to see AMD's new ace of its sleeve (if it has any.)

For a good few months the top end P4's have been outperforming the the top athlons.

Although most mere mortals can not afford to pay through the nose for this kind of performance, and why bother?

When anything above a 1ghz will do the job perfectly fine, now due to Nvidia we now don't have to be stuck with darth VIA, and pick up excellent performance for an excellent price.

Well, with only a pulsar mkI I would have a job stretching it to 9 MV's! I just wanted to be shot of VIA.
Its just an interim move for about 6 months before moving to an intel system, of course if it works well then I may not need to, but stability is my main aim.

Proposed Setup;
Amd athlon Xp1700+ (already have this)
Asus A7N266-c (came today)
2x 256Mb ddr2100 crucial memory, (for twinbank)
Enermax 365 Watt powersupply
Aluminium rack mount case.
Zalman or other make of silent cooler.

I thought seriously about upgrading to an all intel setup, and although most of my income is disposable, I have other things to spend it on at this moment, some of my old stuff I have sold to fund this upgrade so its costing me very little, so am happy cus I don't have to get a job for another couple of months, I can train and learn new skills.

Thanks sub, yeah I looked at these, all these silent solutions are certainly expensive, but worth it for 'the sound of silence'
Oh well, I have to wait untill the supplier has these back in stock.
