Environment -- Windows XP Pro. OS
Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz ASUS P4 B 266 Mainboard

I have completly uninstalled and re-installed the software and drivers but as soon as I re-boot and go to Control Panel and click on Sound and Audio Devices and pick a sample sound I get a distorted sound.

The Windows XP help for distorted sound says:
"An excessively high volume level, or a mismatch between speaker volume level and sound device volume level, can cause distortion.
To adjust the volume of the sound sent to your speakers
Turn the volume control knob on your speakers to its middle position.
Open Volume Control and adjust the left-most volume slider to a comfortable level. Make sure that none of the Mute check boxes except microphone input are selected.
Note

To open Volume Control from the Start, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Volume Control. "

But when I try to open Volume Control I get an error :
"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and other hardware, and then click other hardware"

I can't get the volume Control to come up.
Any suggestion welcome.

Thanks:

there are no mixers for pulsar in the control panel. The volume is adjusted in the mixer in SFP.

And about your crackles:
1) open SFP, tray icon should work it too
2) make sure you got a "WavSource->AnalogDest" connection, if wanted via Mixer or so.
3) XP's "Sound and Audio Devices Properties", choose Audio page. Both playback and recording should be set to "Creamware Play/Rec1".
4) Do not use DirectxSource in XP! Wav drivers replace/include Dx without needing a different driver.
5) Check SFP's SampleRate, DSP load? If there's anything wrong there, check for project loading, sync or ULLI problems. As a troubleshooting guide: Set SFP to master Samplefrequency, leave connected digital devices turned off. Raise ULLI to longer latency.

So this morning I started the PC and played a sound file and it worked fine for about 10 seconds and then went back to the distorted crackling sound.

I am not running any project in Pulsar. Only trying to play a .wav or .mp3 file from my hard-drive or to play any sound in XP's Sound and Audio Devices and every thing sounds distorted and crackled.

I have tried all your suggestions but none seem to work.

BTW, you said Do not use DirectxSource in XP! Wav drivers replace/include Dx without needing a different driver. How can I make sure that I am not using DirectxSource in XP????

Thanks:

1) You have no Creamware program running and you hear sound!?

2) Don't load DxSource in project, but WavSource.
