Z77 Motherboards

Post by dawman »

Regardless of what is said about Intel motherboards, they just don't have the mission critical quality and QA testing they once had.
I have been reading in many forums about guys reading the Intel tested memory configs that State the 8GB Corsair DIMMs at 1.5v, CAS11 passed.
This is a crock of shit, and even the Asus, Gigabyte and other top tier manufactures are as usual release and fix later kind of guys.
This leaves us with Supermicro, Tyan to name a couple that use higher binned Xeon parts and have zero problems with 32GB footprints.
IMHO being my usual distrusting soul, believe that Intel knows what needs to be done, and has a BIOS that will allow the Z77 to load like the C206/Xeon parts.
They really want to move the Xeon versions of the i7 3770k as it is over twice the price.

I do have a working Z77 Sabertooth 1U but still had to install 1 x DIMM, then use Mem OK and it gives you the XMP Profile so you can reboot with 4 x 4 GB DIMMs.
I still can't use this live yet as I get freezes from the Native apps, but the XITE-1 has zero issues as usual.

Months later the BIOS fixes come. I must remember the sell and fix later software mentality has now merged into hardware as well.
But it's worth the wait....

This is a lower speed CPU overclocked like crazy with a custom heating solution.
I will only tweak the RAM from 1.35v to 1.5 which increases it's speed, then Kontakt can reduce the pre load buffering as the 32GBs of RAM w/ SSDs will be the screaming demon.

I think it may be close to the time when I finally upgrade my old-faithful WinXP 3-PCI / 3-Scope card desktop system to one of the new motherboards and finally install Win7.

Hooking it up with Xite will make for a monsterous (borderline overkill) studio environment - with my laptop being used in the 'control' room and the desktop used as an extension hub.

I've also considered cramming everything into a 1-unit rack somehow, so may have to consult you guys on which way to go.

I failed with AMD Sideport RAM 128GB boards, and the i5 Clarksdale where the GPU ( on package ) had priority to the RAM so my 1U experiements failed and Jr. Got some PCs instead.
But the GPU being on the die of the CPU w/ HD4000 GFX is great and we can even use x-amount of resoureces under w7 ultimate to have just even GPU power for the task at hand, but best yet is with a decent 1u HSF combo ( SUpermicro or Dynatron) it's a cool 1U and the Asus Sabertooth really does a great lob at dust and heat protection all in a 1U.
Ne glad to helo when I am done, but loading LASS 2.0 and some new Libraies, with more testing will be weeks. Having an i7 4U as a back up is cool too as righjt now I leave the rig in hopes someone will steal it and I can collect some serious javk, but I undo the XBox and bring it home to run with the new Z77.
One thing is certain and I never listenm but do make sure I kep using a working machine is the wise words of GaryB where you wiat 6 months before jumping on a new platform, but when I smell a 1U I get feverish.....

It's the subject of some study here :

Seems 'cramming' everything into a 1U is not the way to go, unless dawman's Supermicro/Dynatron changes that landscape. Not sure I'd want to be the guinea pig though.

I'm checking into the MSI Z77A-G43.

Scott at ADK custom computers has said to avoid ASUS.

Over the past several years it seems that the various motherboard manufacturers have gone through boom/bust cycles with regard to component supply and/or quality control - in a race to get the next better/best product SKU/variation out to market.

(Could probably also to some degree blame my employer  )

The case is important, and the Asus is fine, but took months to get the 32GB RAM settled.
The case here is what I got, and the same 520w PSU from Supermicro runs pretty darn quiet and cool too. But notice the Dremel / Stamp pattern above the CPU.
And only one expansion slot is needed, and the rise card is a simple ribbon extender.

http://www.rackmountmart.com/rm1u/rm1001.htm

Plus my 1U will sit at the top of a 4U rach under the slanted mixer which really holds the 8U LCD. So the hot air will get sucked out from the PSU, and with the slight Dremel trick on the side ( triple PSU fans ) to accomadate the Sabertooth, heat will rise just like me when the rapture occurs as I have been chosen by the Lord himself. Only downside is he likes Electro so I am trying to get hip before I croak....

Vision DAW is claiming the UD series are great boards too. But all of these boards are good IMHO as long as you wait for the BIOS's to actually make sure you get your board to work like these lying ass reveiwers that always seem to get a working board and BIOS's way before anyone even knows what the problems are.
