a new preamp for dynatube?

Post by bosone »

hi!
i'm currently using a pod pro as a preamp for dynatube, because i can enter in my rig via digital spdif. i use the "tube pre" model with minium gain and flat tone control.
the results are good but i feel there is something still lacking in dynamics and tone.
i also have a tb 202 preamp which i used in the past but that is too noisy to record a dry guitar and reamp with dynatube.

if i would plan to change the tb 202 preamp, which one would you sugget to achieve better / more professional results? with a budget of about 400-500 euro (used)?

how do you record your dry guitars for dynatube?
thanks

this is a great input stage, looks like a current offer in italian eBay
(is shipping always that high ?)
don't be worried by the 'bass' label, the tone control is usable for guitar as well.
I have one of those and largely underestimated it due to the crappy speaker. Recently connected it to a regular 12" cabinet and was blown away by the quality.
It features a discrete input stage plus a 4558, probably moddable into a tubescreamer clone :D
you CAN use that thingy for a (really) cutting tone with the guitar as it comes, but you might as well trash the speaker and cut off the bottom part for a nice pedal.
There's also a version EG10 for guitar, which I haven't heard myself.

otherwise Scope input is sensitive enough for a regular DI, but you may have to make an adapter for asymmetric input if you don't have the XLR plate. A simple Palmer should do, Countryman for the real deal...

cheers, Tom

One of these does the trick for me, mainly coz you get true valve drive. Press 'Bypass' which bypasses the digital FX but still keeps the valve pre in curcuit for 'dry' input.

Now if I hadnt of got the Digitech, I would have definately gone for the Mesa twin tube :

A third choice would have been a RockTron but as you can see I kinda like silver... :o

how about a really nice pre?

it'd be good for lots of things, a true studio quality pre in a cheap box at a cheap price...

Hi Bosone,

Dynatube is my preferred amp sim. I use either a focurite one digital or Joe Meek VQ6. Both has front plugin access. Both sound very clean and have high gain. Both used mono.

I have tried Digitech GSP1011 (So So), Samsamp PSA1 (bypass was best option) and TC Electronic Nova System (very good) but I prefer an uneffected/clean signal into the DAW.

My guitar recording chain:

Clean in --> Scope --> DAW (+ Effects) --> Dynatube (+ Effects) --> Out

The Focurite uses an excellent converter and is able to capture dynamics more than the Meek. The Meek was cheap on Ebay and has no digital connections. Both are very good with mics.

Let us know what you choose, I'm always looking for good pres
