PCI external box

Post by Ricardo »

My PC is gonna die one day. And of course an upgrade means no, or too few PCI slots. My dilemma is, do I change to the Xite for a small fortune, or do I find a PCI external box (also expensive)?
Anyone had any experience with these converter units. e.g. Magma? It is still a hell of a lot less than Xite as I am running 3 DSP cards (13 DSP) which work beautifully.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

is a Magma really cheaper?
the XITE-D is musch more power than you currently have and it's probably about the same price as your cards + the Magma. it's also pci-e, so it's effective lifespan should be longer than your old cards, currently.

otherwise, yes, a Magma will work, but not as well as a motherboard's pci slots. there have been a number of Magma users around here in the past. you should still be able to get a current motherboard with 3 pci slots at the moment, two pci slots are plentiful...

@ garyb
Over here an Xite D is $5000 +, a Magma is $1500. I need x3 PCI slots otherwise it's an outlay for a card with more SHARCS. It is a possibility, but with financial constraints it'll have to be a second hand card.

someone is ripping you off, BIG TIME. i know that shipping is expensive, but that's ridiculous. pm me me, if you're interested. the XITE-D is half that money in the rest of the world. maybe less....that's why i said, your old cards+ a magma are about the same money.

anyway, i7s work just fine with Scope cards, in general.

+1 a ripoff, for $5K here, I would get a full XITE-1 and a brand new laptop to run it on.

Dante, I'm in Sydney. I can't find the Xite-1 to buy in aus. The SC website has it for 3890 Euro (nearly AU$5000) The Xite-1 D is less but has only 10 SHARC (2390 Euro, still pricey). I tried that many before I got my Luna, and it didn't quite have enough power. 18 would be great. What was your idea garyb?
Any ideas? am I missing something?
The mobo and chip look promising. Is XP OK with these?

Thanks for all your replies.

i think so. 4 of the sharcs in the XITE-D are the newer ones. the XITE-D is considerably more power than what you have right now. it's the equivalent of 30-40 of the old dsps. buying an XITE-D and selling your pci cards would be a better purchase than buying a magma. you'll have a more stable system on the pci-e bus which should be around a bit longer with an XITE over the magma, better bus bandwidth too. there are dealers in the states who would sell to you at a discount. so would Thomann.

Aha. now what you're saying makes sense. I probably didn't read all the blurb when the XITE came out as I was not interested at the time. I'll do a bit of internet window shopping to see what's out there. Who's Thomann BTW.
Oh, and thanks again

Theres no aussie distributor so I got mine from Deustchland. Took 6 weeks shipping but the deal was good. Now you could get an even better price with the killer SDK deal. At least if you do it in the next 24 hours ?

Better whip out yer MasterCard...

write a very short message to support requesting the SDK XITE deal. tell them exactly which one you want and they will tell you how to continue.

I've written to support and sales. Awaiting reply now.
A big thank you to all for being so helpful in this. I've been out of the system for about 6 years (3 young children) and have decided to get serious again. So forgive me if I appear a little naive.
