plugz digital vs analog sound
plugz digital vs analog sound
hey guys i know this is probably a stupid question but i was just wondering about our plugins and their sound, analog or digital sound? i mean since they run on dsp hardware does that make them more analog then digital? i was wondering this becuase i wanted to buy the spl transient designer plugin which also have a vst native versions as well (some other plugz like bx digital, spl vitalizer, softube plugz...also have native versions)and wanted to know would our scope platform version sound any different than the native versions? cheers
Re: plugz digital vs analog sound
It will probably sound different since coding is different. It's all in algorithms. IMHO even today digital synth(or FX) still can not match analog gear but that is not bad plus some digital can sound vastly different over analog and maybe you will like them more. I think it is just matter of time when this digital vs analog will be more aligned. So if you want to have analog favor simply invest in analog. It can not be more simple then this.ironman wrote:hey guys i know this is probably a stupid question but i was just wondering about our plugins and their sound, analog or digital sound? i mean since they run on dsp hardware does that make them more analog then digital? i was wondering this becuase i wanted to buy the spl transient designer plugin which also have a vst native versions as well (some other plugz like bx digital, spl vitalizer, softube plugz...also have native versions)and wanted to know would our scope platform version sound any different than the native versions? cheers
Re: plugz digital vs analog sound
Transient Designer doesn't 'sound' at all to my ears.
The DSP version is identical to the hardware device except for the most extreme settings, which are said to slightly differ.
As Sony also has a very good native plugin in this domain, I wouldn't expect much difference (as it's from SPL).
But I wouldn't bet on stuff with distortion and filters - it often just sounds 'different' due to the different processors.
Just 'different' - not better or worse.
cheers, Tom

Re: plugz digital vs analog sound
IMO the native version of SPL Transient Designer sound worse compared to the UAD or Scope version. So I prefer DSP than native.
The UAD/Scope version sounds so similar compared to hardware (and as a "plus" allows multiple istances!!!)
The difference is slightly at extreme settings (that I don't use because are "innatural").
Go for DSP version without doubt for Transient Designer plugin

4PC + Scope 5.0 + no more Xite + 2xScope Pro + 6xPulsarII + 2xLunaII + SDK + a lot of devices (Flexor III & Solaris 4.1 etc.) + Plugiator.
Re: plugz digital vs analog sound
Slightly offtopic...Didn't Jimmy said that new version of SPL TD v5 sound slightly different compared to "old" Scope TD? Can anyone provide some insight on this? I don't have v5
Re: plugz digital vs analog sound
it sounds slightly different, yes, but it's marginal. I have to say, after playing around with both the new and the old TD, the new one fits better in my mixes, so i barely use the old one anymore...

thnxs guys looks like scope it is
Re: plugz digital vs analog sound
Until further notice, Scope runs algorithms on DSP, so it's all digital. You can emulate all you want, but it will never be analog as in hand selected caps, transistors and diodes with each their inherently specific reaction curves subject to temperatures, not-so-correct voltages etc, which eventually make up the character of analog beasts.

Re: plugz digital vs analog sound
for example there is only one result for sin(x);
if used same datatypes for calculation any mathfunction will give you the same result;
---
most analog HWunits have prozessors inside already anyway;
but even transistor temperatur curves can be rebuild digital;
handselected algos are replacing handselected HWcomponents;
good vibes
