What are the "Must Have"s for a Scope pro ?

Post by koalaboy »

Hi,

So I have my first Scope board (the 15DSP pro) with Scope 5, and am hoping to experiment in the modular side of things mostly.

Modular 4 is the only item definitely on my list, with Flexor being likely, but what else would you recommend I definitely don't miss ?

The Zarg synths look very nice - I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that Solaris v5 is the best 'choice' here ?

Please suggest / comment-upon / direct-me-to anything you feel relevant.

Thanks,

Michael.

If you're checking Zarg then get the RD II modules for Modular - plus some of his synths work within the Modular environment, check the specs.

Also check out some of space f's BlackBox stuff - you get some more modules that can then load a multitude of oscillators. filters etc. too.

Don't forget the free stuff from Roy Thinnes: cwm.

And also Shroomz+Sharc's stuff: BC modular.

And there's some other stuff from j9k.

Not "must haves", but the ones I use the most:

- A SpaceF mixer (or Wolf's, if you need Mackie control), is a much better option than the stock ones.
- SpaceF's Blackbox II - for modules, synths, fx, etc.
- John Bowen's Pro-Wave + RD inserts will get you a wonderful semi-modular synth, and you can even add it to a modIV patch
- Flexor III - also essential, as nothing sounds like it
- DAS dynamic bundle - my choice for mixing
- ModIV, of course.

There are so many interesting devices, depending on what you want to use your card for. I'd say you'll be pretty much covered in the sound synthesis area, for mixing or mastering there are many other useful devices.

Mr.A's links above are also recommended, and browsing through the devices area of Z will surely surprise you.

Cheers, and welcome to Scope!

Thanks for the replies so far.

I should have mentioned a couple more things - one is that this is a (very) part-time hobby for me, so whilst I like hoarding the gear, I'm probably very much a beginner in so far as knowing what I want. Also, I have a UAD-2 Quad for mixing & mastering (alongside far too much software) and so whilst I will certainly look through the Scope side of things for this, I'm more likely to spend money on the modular/synth aspects.

Oh, and as a PS. you may find that although hardware modulars are very nice, that you won't be able to do half the stuff that Modular IV + FleXor3 gives you, so even if you go the hardware route i think you'll find many uses for your Scope still.

DAS mix/mastering tools and the BX digital meet or exceed UAD quality....so do the new S/C verbs...

 There's no way I'd actually sell the Scope Modular now I have it - the hardware is just for the hands on aspect, and no computer involved.

Of course, with all the modules for Modular, I may never actually come out the other end. :D

(And depending on how easily I can understand the SDK, this could be my playground for a long time to come)

That's excellent news, although maybe not for my funds.

except for the BX Digital, all of that stuff is cheap, or as with the S/C verbs, free with v5...

i'm not telling you to put down the UAD, although it's a lttle bit redundant now, especially considering that it's not real-time....still, one can never have too many mixtools...

Well why not just get the freebie Modular stuff in the right folders first, then demo the stuff.
Then decide if you want Modular IV and Flexor.
I am pretty sure you'll want to follow up with those items.
If you decide to stay Modular Black Box II, RDII and Flexor RD modules from Bowen will extend yuour Modular possibilites.
If you get through all of that within 6 months I'll be impressed.
But these are the best elements of using Modular.

I won't confuse you with more options but everything mentioned ablove I concur with.

yup, I forgot the Proddy wasn't standard. My favorite S|C synth, actually... But my first stop would be either at SpaceF's, to check out the BlackboxII, or Adern's, for Flexor3!

Can't argue with any of the above. Think that Flexor is essential if you're going to be using the Modular.
Zarg Pro Wave is awesome. Not as fully featured as Solaris, but more immediate and my favourite of the enhanced analogue emulations out there. Probably can't do anything that Solaris can't do, but for immediate results I often go for Pro wave instead of Solaris.

Adern's XOR is another overlooked gem. Unashamedly digital sounds, but very versatile and an interesting user interface makes for quite a different synth from the run of the mill VA.

Go with any of the reccomendations people have made above and you can't go far wrong!

Oops ! I forgot to ask : is the Pro wave ready to work with Xite ? As I know that Solaris 5 is not...

ProWave rules the skies.
I actually spent a week trying various different versions.
Just make sure to JB you have XITE-1.
ALso get the RDII Modules, and Flexor RD...

So I'd be set for a year or two with:

Modular IV
Flexor III
Pro-Wave & RDII modules
SpaceF Blackbox II

& all the free devices I can find.

(+ the 5.0 SDK when it arrives)

This sounds like a plan :D

Really? I should like to know more about this. UAD have a few very good compressors, I like a lot the Fairchild. Are Scope at the same level? If are, Xite-1 is the way to go for this great dsp power for sure.
