It's too bad they didnt' included i860/i870 since they're faster versions of that i5 with HT & TURBO core support enabled.

So, judging from these benchmarks, the performance seems to rank as follows: For realtime DAW performance, the X58 with its core i7's is far ahead of the P55 in every way and still the better choice. For rendering only, the P55 is on par with the X58 platform - or even better at stock speed, especially when comparing i7 920 vs. i7 860.

Get the X58 if it pleases you, however I think the i870/P55 should be quite competitive to the 920/x58 for most and with enough of a cost savings to not justify the x58. Note that most benchmarks are using the i860 *not* the i870...

Looks great to me, the only downside of those machines (aside from the lack of expansion compared to a desktop) is the loud fans. But I doubt that's a concern in your usage

if another single U is not a problem (and an appropriate case is available) I'd definitely prefer that.

ATX or uATX could be used here.
This could be used frp the XITE-1 also. Our PCI-e 1X Card is a low profile card, so the 90 degree riser wouldn't be needed.
The main reason I want a 1U is because I cannot perform w/o my 3U Analog.
With the design above, I don't even have to build it,I could use it pre built. But because of it's depth in inches, my 4U ATA SLB case can hold the 3U analog ( front ) 1U XITE-1 ( front )
MX8 MIDI Patch Bay 1U ( back )
Furman PL Plus 1U ( back )
MIDI Solutions F8 MIDI Pedal Controller ( 1U )
Supermicro 1U ( back )
All of this fits using both sides of a 4U ATA. Mobility and Strength. 2 x Powered Baretta Cabinets, an 88 note controller, Solaris hardware synth and my stand.
I am thinking of the future when I am in my 60's and can't carry the heavy ass 16U's......
That's a long time still but who knows, my 4U might be too heavy by then.
Because of the 16GB's of RAM I doubt I would need more 1U's. But if I do Vienna Strings has a great Server Host application where Gigabit LAN would connect them, and no Graphics card, Soundcard of MIDI card would be needed. MIDI and Audio are passed along via the Gigibit LAN connections. The 4GB UDIMM's are 175 USD. Just a few months ago they were going for 225-250 USD. By summertime 2010 they will be more commonplace. The Samsung and Elpida versions are certified w/ the LGA1156 designs.
