Maxtor disk: your experiences!

Dear Creamwarians (or ... Soniccorians?)
I had many problems with current Maxtor (Seagate now) disks; my types are:
1) Maxtor STM3250820AS
2) ST3320620AS
3) ST3500320AS
4) Maxtor S TM3250820AS

The greater problems happened with the 3) and the 4): normal saving/recording operations caused many LBA errors on disks.
What are your experiences?
Can the LBA errors depend on software or configuring/assembling hardware?

i hope you know you have some affected disks from the seagate/maxtor firmware problem.

as for those errors maybe because you are getting them on more than 1 drive they are caused by something different?
its not likely 2 of them would break in the same way at the same time.

i have had very nice results with maxtor, but also, i've had the most failures with maxtor...

The qualty of the HD depends on the series.
there were times when IBM HD where exteremely well and then with OEMing Hitachi this era ended.

Seagate was known for stable and fast ones and now see the other thread.

Maxtor went almost bankrupt and at that time had no good reputation.
Currently they seem to be better but I have no Maxtor on board.

So.....it depends.

I thought too late: I tried to format it but it didn't answer to my call and the SO doesn't recognize it! I think it died definitively ... Think twice to buy Seagate (Maxtor) ...

Uhmmmmm ... I'm thinking about my disks problems: no internet connection, only few programs, one disk for librarians, one for audio, regular defragmentation, big aluminium case with 5 fans, one audio card: I wrong anything??
What do you think about Western Digital Caviar 500 SATA2 and Hitachi Deskstar 500 SATA?

I can recommend WD Caviar. I've stopped using Seagate, their recent drives suck. WD seems much quieter here and performance is great.

I have had bad experiences with Maxtor, can't recommend them.

What do you think about Samsung disks? The web citizens tell very well about!!!

I have samsung sata disk in my PC. older series 160 GB. Very quiet and stable.

But I dont know current series.

Actually 7200 rpm are enough nowadays. For a quiet HD avoid 10000 rpm disks.

I have had problems with Seagate and Maxtor. I used quite many years only Maxtor, but no more.
Out of the most commonly available HDs here I chose Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB (WD3200AAKS). I have them in three machines. So far no problems, and most of all, they're enough silent. Price here in the North 45e.

I use Hitachi in my main daw 320 gb sata2 and a wd 80 gb in the scope rig.Never had any maxtor but i had seagate disks which were good and faultfree.

did seagate get new management or something. if you cant trust them who can you trust

btw i use raptor on my "other" machine and it is not loud. (its a 150) the light swoosh of the 120mm cpu and cooling fan is all you hear.

but no i wouldn't put it in the studio. it gets a bit warm.

Seagate did just fire their CEO (January 12th 2009) and their COO resigned (on the 15th). The reason for the CEO's departure given to Financial news outlets was his attitude towards the Board of Directors (who is essentially running the company now, board president is acting as CEO) and his company's position in the market (he made controversial statements you can find easily in google). They've also instigated some layoffs and cut upper management salaries though of course salaries don't mention bonuses and other executive priveledges given.

It does seem as if Seagate has some company issues (I'm going to crosspost this info into the Seagate drive thread too btw), hopefully this is going to put them on track to fixing things. But I would certainly avoid their drives for the next 6 months, to let the supply of bad drives empty out of retailers and give time for them to bring out new drives, and have data collected on how they hold up.

Most of my disks are SCSI/SAS, but I do have a WD Caviar Green 1TB now which seems to be fine, for a consumer drive. The latest Raptors (Velociraptor) are very high performing drives and at 2.5" with a custom heatsink not terribly hot with even moderate airflow, but they're performance drives meant for RAID users and probably overkill for anyone not running high track counts.
