They probably don't know as much about the specifics of Scope drivers though (probably would just say it's a Scope problem)

There are at least a half a dozen guys who use Scope on that forum.

Krizrox, who also posts here, is one of them.

Not much effort to ask.

I use ASIO drivers, but 16 bit, so I can't tell you much. I used WDM for years, worked fine as well. Just rememeber that if you change driver's you have to go in and delete the "aud.ini" file to get Sonar to re-profile the drivers.

Is it better to use WDM? I've not tried that. Would that use the basic Wave source modules or the 24 bit ones or one of the others? (there seem to be 4 potentially to choose from)

I'll try deleting the aud.ini too - didn't know about that

Crap - looks like the problem wasn't with Sonar or Scope but with my CPU - I tried throttlewatch and it was throttling like crazy which means it was overheating. Thing is it already has a huge Zalman cooler so something is up. I tried changing some bios settings to see if that would help reduce the throttling and now the damn thing won't start up at all - I get Windows to load but then the system shuts down. It's always been a temperamental chip that P4 3.6.

Check your power supply as well.
Open the case and point a separate fan at it and see what happens. If it still acts crazy, then I suspect power supply.

I'm pretty sure it's the CPU playing up - once the system had cooled off I managed to get Windows to load fully but the CPU temperature is really erratic. It's fine if I'm not doing much but even running a few tracks is pushing the temperature up to over 80!! and when it gets that far it shuts down and I have to let it cool off again.

I'm trying to get stuff backed up as my first priority - then I'll open it up and think about what to do next. If I have to replace the CPu i might as well replace the mobo as well which means taking the whole thing apart and I'm not really very confident with doing that - it's my Scope system so I don't need anything too powerful but I'm thinking something that handles heat better this time (maybe an AMD?) and that works better with Scope

the new intel processors are extremely good for heat dissapation/power usage. p4s weren't so good.

possibly the case is kinda clogged....

Thermal paste can degrade over time, especially if it was (mistakenly) applied liberally on initial installation. Also with older latch-type mounting systems the heatsink can slightly shift back & forth over time in heating & cooling cycles (ie, difference between being turned on & off) or when the system is moved.

Ie, try reseating your heatsink first with some new thermal paste (properly applied, lots of info on this online & it's specific per socket type AS WELL AS cpu type, duals & quads especially).
