Cubase SX will work on Win98, but it is not an officially supported OS.

Win98, SE and ME are dead OS's as far as Microsoft is concerned, so I'm glad Steinberg is for once having some forward thinking and recommending 2k and XP.

Cubase 5.x runs very well on XP as does my Pulsar II card, I have far less problems than I ever had in Win9x. Again, it's the right mixture of motherboards and common sense that prevails!

Oh, Cubase SX will have a USB dongle which is fine by me... I'll stick it in a usb hub and be done with it.

I want a lean and mean operating system. Windows XP operates ag 2GB on the hard drive. I've been drooling over Linux/UNIX lately and see that a lot of the really high end hard-disk stuff:

Sony Oxford
Tascam SX-1
Fairlight Systems
and even the new Alesis ADAT HD24

is all using a non Microsoft approach to their hard-disk and file management. I'm wondering if Stienberg could easily port their product line to Linux. I'd be interested and its a little more stable.

Otherwise, we'll be wallowing in SX/XP. I shouldn't knock it too much but yet Win98lite does it for me. Really small and stable and optimized (with this sites help) for my Pulsar and Cubase.

Other than the surround sound and the new network feature, I've not seen a real and vital need to upgrade. What makes you all drool?

XP runs very well... don't confuse the fact that just because it uses a 2gb footprint it's a resource hog. I find it uses very little resources on my p3 800 (384mb ram).

If you want a *nix based multimedia OS, you arent going to get any closer than Mac OS X. As I see it, the guys that have jumped on that ship have probably another solid 2 years (at least) before that platform will be considered "stable" for daily work.

Having said that, I really hope Creamware will have solid drivers for OS X. I think mac is heading in a great direction and again can become the premier platform for multimedia development.

Until then, I'm buying a P4 2.4 and waiting to see what happens...

I've been trying out the 1.0a (alpha) version of cubase SX and - it rocks. Basically it's a Nuendo with new graphical looks (even uses the .npr file extension as in Nuendo). It is as expected (from a alpha version) still a little dodgy - and I was not able to import Nuendo project made in Nuendo 1.52, it also gave some strange noise while playing multiple tracks - but the looks and feel are great!

I read the information about Cubase SX and I think it will be the best software for composing coz i think it is a mix of cubase and Sonar . it offers the Sonar's tools (unlimited undos / automation curves(exponential) / audio managing etc....)
and the stability and the professionalism of cubase with the ASIO Driver.
For me before Cubase SX, Sonar was the best sequencer but i have allways the feeling when i'm working on sonar that it's not professional .... ! it's sounds not warm and miss stability . But i couldn't go to cubase or logic ... even i tried many times ... coz the functions offers sonar are not in this both soft. The unlimited undos for example : when you are used to use it , you cannot do without after .
What's a shame for a sequencer to don't have this function !!! i think...
All the softs in graphical domain or video and whatever (even in the wordpad program !!!) have a unlimited undos function !!
Cubase sx will be a step in the maniability of proffesional audio sequencer ! i hope so !
We will see ..
