My new DAW is running

Post by Cochise »

I'm on the final steps rearranging the setup of the rig in my home studio.

The new machine based on Intel DP35DP, Core 2 Duo E8200, Kingston KVR800D2N5K2/2G, is running good, cool and silent.
The only noise source now is the WD Raptor 76GB, and I'm still in doubt if use it as system disk or boot the system from the Seagate Barracuda 11 360GB, that's much more silent.
Although the Barracuda has a burst rate quite higher than the Raptor, as a single plate 7200 RPM disk, its seek time is far higher than 10 ms, so the Raptor might suit better as data disk, although 76GB could be anyhow tight...

Setting up again the old machine (I'm gonna use it as support PC), I've become aware about how abstruse the BIOS of the previous motherboard is. Unless I took the manual, I was not able to set it for correctly work with a single SATA HDD, once I disassembled the RAID 0 stripe from it.
The only BIOS feature I miss a lot is the boot selection menu splashing by F8 during the POST (without accessing the whole BIOS setup).

There are no shared IRQ now for the 2 CW boards, using the DP35DP and it wasn't needed to disable anything (all USB, IE1394, COM and whatever, are active).
It also wasn't needed to move the two Luna II in different slots.
Unluckily I can't perform the Masterverb test since I run out of DSP before reaching the PCI bandwidth limit.
Any cheap (but working) Scope Project or Professional for sale?

Nice to hear about your new DAW, Cochise.
I'm going to build a DAW for my son and I'll use similar MoBo, processor and memory.
HDs will be different, I have to use those WD drives our local shops have.
The case is my old Antec Sonata (Mk.1). I've already built two new pc's for myself.

i only know a 74GB raptor;
its old but still very fast;
you should use the raptor for audio data spezialy when using samples;

good vibes

In my favourite retail shop they have Raptors available from 36,7 GB (99EUR) to the new 300GB VelociRaptor (261EUR!).

Are these kinds of very fast HDDs necessary for working with samples?

for normal use each nowadays HD does the job;
in case you have one faster i would use for data;
as for sampling it depends on what you use for sampling;

i use 74 gb raptor for recording and save to bigger ones for postprozess.;

hope it helps a bit

Thx kaju. I've taken the Raptor for my previous DAW, since I was working with two Sata 150 in RAID 0 mode, using two partition, System and Data, created using the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Option ROM utility; that's a freakish way for a DAW.
System startup and initialization of apps was not as fast as I liked using common Sata 150 and no RAID 0, with my previous system...
Being still top ATA disk, noise apart, I installed the Raptor in the new DAW...
I added lot of self-made damping solutions in the current chassis, reducing vibrations and resonances. The noise is muffled now, but considering that all the other components are very quiet, it stands out.

A fast startup becomes a need working with a not perfectly stable system, and my previous PC/setup sometimes had to reboot in the middle of a session...

You're right. I'm becoming kind of restless drunk. Even the Barracuda is 320GB and not 360.

Am I also lacking 6?
