Voltage Stabilizer vs UPS...

Post by firubbi »

My UPS(2200va IDEL made in Korea) just got burn out due to voltage fluctuation. I want to use a voltage stabilizer (that has low/hi cut out point…<<100volt/>>280v). so is it ok to use a voltage stabilizer before a UPS? Coz someone told me not to use due to usp has its own stabilizer.

thanks

I've ordered a Furman PM-8 E SERIES II POWER CONDITIONER. It is on sale for little less than the PL model - otherwise I wouldn't have paid the extra for the meters (I might have been curious though)
But to be honest, I have no first hand experience. A local venue uses a couple of Furmans. The sound at that place is quite good. But the Furmans are - at most - not the only reason for this.

By the way, if your UPS got burned due to voltage fluctuations, doesn't that kind of tell you, that its stabiliser wasn't good enough - thus the advice not to stabilise the power before it is kind of bad (anyway, it was for you in the situation, where your UPS got fried).

There are all different sorts of devices out there. I suppose someone, somewhere makes a unit that both stabilizes and also provides emergency power in the event of a blackout. If all you have is a garden variety UPS that does nothing but provide battery backup in the case of a blackout, I don't see any reason why you can't plug that into a voltage regulator. I have a Furman AR1215 here which I swear by. At very least it's cheap insurance for all my gear. Digital equipment (in particular) doesn't like it when the input voltages drop too far,

btw - those power conditioners are nothing but expensive fuses (and convenience outlets). The only audio benefit they provide is a tiny bit of filtering in the event of dimmer noise (probably worse at your local tavern).
