Please help -suggest a good case/cpu/mobo combo - scope pro

Post by sonicstrav »

I need to get on and build a new DAW.
I have been looking at the following cases
Antec P180
Antec P182
Antec Titan
The Antec Titan seems rather big - would it be possible to fit 2 scope professional 15-DSP cards in the P180/P182 (I have 1 scope pro already)

Also I need a motherboard to host a Intel Quad Core CPU - which I reckon is better for a DAW lasting around 2 years than the Duo Core. I will go for an Intel chipset, but which is the best board to fit in the above cases and is also able to accommodate the above cards.

Also I will be going for 4GB of good quality ram

Also any tips about quiet power supplies - is the Antec Phantom any good?

Budget for the build will be up to £1200 ($2400)

I would be grateful for anyone's help in this matter as it will make the build much easier :)

I would just like advice really if it is OK to go for the antecs - I have read the forums but I can't be sure whether they are able to fit 2 scope pro if I wished to expand my 15 DSP set up in the future.

Also, I have read the forums on the motherboards :

Do I go for a Intel DG33FB / or a Intel DP35DP / DP965LT or even one of the newer ones X38/X48

Processors?
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 12M Cache S775 1333MHZ ? (max i'll pay)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz 12M Cache S775 1333MHZ (£150 cheaper)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz 6M Cache S775 1333MHZ (new one 'Wolfdale') (another £35 cheaper)

Any ideas what I should go for?

If You Dare, this is the most fiercest machine to date. Dual quad Xeons and Mac's have enjoyed this ridiculous amount of power, but now audio schmucks like us can actually use this power if we have the right applications.

Check out the LAME benchmarks @ www.tomshardware.com also.

I do not think I would ever need this, but I am starting to look into a video DAW that would use a couple of Scope boards just for mixing and effects.

impressive for sure :o

but isn't that fan it the way of the PCI cards? If it isn't, it's the best way I've seen to keep the scopes cool: pushing the heat up (but against the S/TDM cables?) :-?

I have been researching this in the threads at the extreme forums for months. It is suppose to put the nail in the coffin of AMD. As much as I hate to see that, it is inevitable.

The German government has an 84,000,000 USD investment so maybe there's hope. If that government takes a role in their future there will be hope. But it appears that Intel is just way too far ahead of the game for the next year or so.

The fan was designed to cool those big video cards and sits appropriately under full length cards.

It will be at a reasonable price by this Fall as the 2 x quad's that work will be much cheaper.

If I go ahead with my video/audio DAW plans it surely be considered.

64bit Video apps are way ahead of the audio/MIDI apps that we are accustomed to. Many apps have been running on XP64 for a few years now, and also MS server apps.

Intel is really starting to impress many with their new BIOS, and now this beast.

They really are going after the gaming market in a big way, and we are the ones who will benfit from that.

It's so Bitchin' just to look at.

Notice that the 13" x 12" design is perfect for a 4U ATX, and they stole Supermicro's DIMM design that lines up the RAM perfectly for a rear case fan.

Most impressive. I still make money off of my Supermicro P4SCT+II that has the same DIMM layout.

If you use the skulltrail without modification, you will also get a free sound effects generator. it can do:

F18 Jet taking off.
Hurricane.
Hovercraft.
Niagara falls.

case, i'm not sure these days. it's hard to find a case that will accept a full length pci card right now. my favorite were the antec tx/chieftec cases but they are discontinued. you'll have to do some shopping. for the motherboard, the intel 965, g33 or p35 chipsets all work well. i'd probably choose an intel board with either g33 or p35. i'd get a 3ghz core2 duo. this is about the best combo of performance and price at the moment...

Better read the whole review.
I planned all kinds of modifications for the 182 case but gave up and bought a Titan case.

i read somewhere its a tight fit even for the large video card in the antec 180/182 case, and i saw one in the store, apart from the sheet of metal stuck on the sides it looks very cheap.

the titan looks like it will fit full length cards, it has the holders.

the way to tell is if the case has something like this
http://www.ap0calypse.com/scottrempel/mge/xcase30.jpg
for the cards to sit in. (at the front of the case)

and no im not suggesting you buy the hideous case from the article i stole that picture from :D

if you have rack mount equipment, i would suggest a rack mount PC case. by some strange coincidence, pc equipment uses the same rack as music equipment :D

http://www.antec.com/pdf/drawings/Titan ... rawing.pdf

The item No.20 in the drawing is long card holder.
So obviously you can get in all the cards you want.
It's an expensive case I admit, but here in our country it's the only alternative.

I have one pro card even in an Antec Sonata (v.1) case but it was a little bit tricky to get there, and the place is not ideal. I'll move it to the Titan.

this old case is still great.

you can find them cheap sometimes, they need a bit of modification to get lots of free space, take out crap i didn't want etc.

it used to be blue.
more work is being done on the front bit.
change to a scythe ninja heat sink as soon as i can find the box with the adapter bits :(
and machining a new card holder. etc etc
it has rack ears i have tio put them back on

look how much stupid wire comes with that power supply. i only used 3 of them :)

Thanks for the advice! I will probably go for the titan - it's expensive but I do have the option to add SRBs in the future :) I do want to build something that will last a good while.

Yeah, that was exactly the thinking behind my decision, too :)
