Looking into new DAW - are these parts OK?

Dual platter is as big as you want to go.

Trust me, Gigas gives a HDD a serious workout, and WD, or Seagate, are the best for durability.

WD enterpise HDD's are basically old SCSI technology re vamped. They are quite fast @ 10k, and fairly quiet in a DAW.

Seagate's are good nowadays, but when going to IDE / SATA they had problems a few years back. They have been the SCSI kings forever though.

The new GREEN WD's are SSLLOOOOWWW now.....read this..............................

Have you seen the Gigabyte P35-DS3R? This might be an option.
I'm compairing this one with the Asus P5K, as I'm thinking about upgrading too within a few months. I'm not sure which one is better.
They have the same chipset (P35), same FSB speed (1333 MHz), and they both have 3 PCI slots.
But then the X38's are rising, but it might be too early to consider that chipset already?

yeah, read it, and then go to that part where noise and power consumption is mentioned. didn't we always want to have silent drives?
and even if the GP series cannot compete with the other drives in that test they are probably way faster than what we have now (except us raptor fans

)

What again are the dimensions of a scope card (cm!). I forget they need to fit, and I am looking at:

Dimensions:
-16.7" (H) x 8.1" (W) x 18.2" (D)
-42.5cm (H) x 20.6cm (W) x 46.3cm (D)

Scope Pro: 31,2 x 10,8 x 1,6 (without slot cover)

160 Gig is still enough for a DAW

why quadcore? why dualcore? why gfx cards with 512mb onboard memory?

well, the answer for bigger harddiscs is the same since years: because there are only two types of harddiscs. new ones and full ones. period.
(and in this case, WD doesn't supply their silent green drives smaller than 500GB. if you want exactly what they provide, you gotta take a big one. period again

).

yes, you get what you pay for.

and the price per GB isn't that bad. there were times when bigger drives were much, much more expensive, especially in relation to the small ones.
maybe a Tera isn't necessary, right, but I (and yes, that's my personal taste) wouldn't even think about less than 500GB...

it's a nice case, i've used it before.
it's no good for 15dsp cards, though.

in fact, with antec killing the tx series, there's no reasably priced antec case left that is good for the big cards.

there are still tx1050s around, but not many in this part of the world. the old chieftec would be a good utilitarian case that will work.

Remember when a quad platter design has a single platter failure, all 4 of the platters fail.

Dual platter designs are as chancy as I want to get.

Although I really like the Hitachi 7K1000. It is an excellent A / V HDD, but built for storage space, and speed, w/ little concern for heat, noise, or warranty.

WD 10k HDD's are the fastest around still, and do not fail ever. But I stream tons of audio live and stabilty / speed are a must.

You can buy a rack mounted ATX w/ a RAID cage for 150 USD. It silences and cools your drives, and will house 3 x full length cards w/ fans on each end directly pointing at the cards. The only downfall on such a design is to have an external DVD / CD drive. It's no biggie though, transferring or loading externally through USB is a snap.

iStarUSA is from Taiwan, not USA, but their cases are well ventillated. If you ever want to gig out, just get a shock rack from SKB, and your good to go.
