Thanks, but personally, I've given up on Cubase upgrades. From my point of view, V4 isn't worth the upgrade cost, especially since (from 4.0) they dropped support for the Direct X plug-ins I still want to use.

Moreover, and very importantly, Steinberg's contempt for their customers beggars belief and I no longer have any time for the appalling attitude they have consistently displayed in this respect over the last few years. This is a great shame, as I do feel their software is truly excellent in many respects. I suspect that if they still had at least one decent multi-platform competitor things may be rather different...

Anyway, the bright side is that at least I'm saving money - I'm still using SX3 and probably will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, as it already does most things I need from a DAW package. Eventually, when I really have to, I'll probably move over to something else, but I can't see that happening for a good while longer, especially while I still have my scope card!

Regards,

Badger

Well let me jump in here as well.

I bought Cubase 4 just to be able to have an app where I could record vocals, download some stuff here at the Z, etc.

Since Yamaha had bought them they have shot themselves in the foot.

I believe that Yamaha has done this knock to off the top sequencer app over a period of time, so they can release their own stuff.

Yamaha had the best hardware sequencers ever made, and had a jump on everyone else in that area.

I was all hyped up to buy C4 and was so let down when I tried repeatedly to use it. Their customer service is despicable.

This leads me to believe that as soon as Yamaha purchased Steinberg they have neglected many, many areas. I wonder how much of the staff they laid off.

I hate to sound so negative, but how come SX3, and C3 can work so well, and C4 falls down miserably?

I maintain Yamaha wanted this to happen, as their performance has gone from stable, to just piss poor, while leaving more and more stable sections out, while adding more that don't work.

The Death Of A Former Great Application Is Evident To Me.

Hi ,

Gotta say I agree with Scope4live , reading thru this thread has stirred some recollections....
I started with the Steinberg Pro16 on a Commodore64 in 1985...then graduated to Cubase Audio Falcon , which wasn't too shabby at the time ( mid 90s ) rock solid midi and audio never once crashed ..., moving across to PC in 1998 the Steinberg people couldn't have been less co-operative , gotta say they were a bunch of pricks at the time .
Funny how that attitude seems to have hung around that company through all its rebranding and ownership changes . They're so very friendly ...not ! ....it does tend to make one source one's software alternatively ,but of course I didn't say that ...

It's a shame they never had someone as friendly and diligent as Ralf . but I'll bet they lost plenty of good people along the way .

Ciao , MV

I only can complain about everything.

Everything from quality to a total lack of concern for customer support.

What I found to be insulting was 6 weeks after I wrote " 12 EMAILS " their fix was a virus / spyware installation !!?? They then attempted to insult me ( 2 months later !! ) w/ statements like " incompatible software / hardware ?? Really,..................I guess Scope and Gigastudio accidentally worked fine. I even bought a Cubase 4 video from the Digital Doctors w/ that sexy voiced female narrator, to no avail. I tried for 6 months to get it to work before finally turning their 500 USD CD into my Jagemeister coaster. Fuck 'em.

Funny thing is that people still praise their products, and seem quite happy to get fucked, as long as a fix arrives in a reasonable ammount of time............ 9 MONTHS ??!!

I never bought one peice of hardware in my life where I waited for a fix to arrive ?? Welcome to the typical virtual world. Everybody does this including Tascam, EMagic, and many others.

I find this " release it now, fix it later " marketing to be common, and totally unnacceptable.

Thankfully our founding fathers of Scope were under no gun other than self pride before releasing their package.

I have a package I would like to release and send to Steinberg / Yamaha.....................I shall put a bag under my ass the next time I wanna take a shit !!

Actually,

I have used hardware sequencers, mic pre.'s, Alesis HD 24/96, and a 2" Otari for years, and it sounds much better to me. Sure it's a hassle compared to the one button push approach, but the full round sound of vocals on Tape is only one example.

I will give C4 one more try in December when GaryB visits. He couldn't get it to work twice before, and is a Cubase Guru.

For 500 USD I am willing to give it a year before I remove it's footprint and dongle from my beloved DAWg.

I bought it to download music on the internet, it could be a message? I was warned by many associates to never post my un protected music on the internet. I wish I knew how my buddy w/ Nuendo transfers our 2" tape masters to the internet. I have 15 years worth of music in reels here. I would love to post a couple of tracks where I used the Matrix 12/ XPander combo.

I Still Mourn Their Thick, Sweet, FAT BASTARD Sound.

I found that minimalistic DAW like FL Sutdio is truly godsend in combination with scope. Of course depend on what you need but smaller DAW company does have better user support and fixes if any are instantly available.

I am glad i sold my cubase sx 3 which was most stable of all...

I used Cubase 4.1 on 2 computers. On the Creamware computer, it worked fine but I didn't do a very complex sequence. I'll be testing it further and report back here. With the laptop it worked alright but I tipped the edge when I added too many synthesizers and effects. That computer only has 512 megs of RAM.

Is it worth it? I felt SX 3 was not worth it over SX 2 but SX 4 was and 4.1 is a lot better. For the people who are having ASIO problems, yes that does suck. As far as support goes, was it ever good? Was Creamware support ever good? I find with these companies usually if I am doing something wrong they can help me but if there is a defect then they pretend this is the first time they ever heard of it and they never apologize and say they are working to fix it. I think there is generally a wall between the support department and the engineers. It's like they are too busy to be bothered with actual customer complaints.

It's the new effects and synths that make it great. I made this song:

http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23553

It plays flawlessly using Scope ASIO drivers. Here are the plug-ins I used in this project (note: all of these are new or updated but this is not a complete list of what is new in Cubase 4.1):

VSTi:

Spector
Mystic
Prologue
HALionOne (2 instances)

VST:

ModMachine
Roomworks
Roomworks SE (3 instances)
Multiband Compressor
Stereo Delay
Whah Wah
Maximizer
Limiter
Apogee UV22 (for dithering)

in my opinion every of the cubase fx and synths are far weaker sounding than anything scope owns.

we have better sounding synths, better filters and eqs, better comps and much better reverb stuff. :)

Hello.... did you hear Cubase 4.1 effects and synthesizers? If you haven't played with it, then you shouldn't be making that comment. I don't think you would be saying that if you did. To be fair Scope sounds different but lets face it, there hasn't been *any* development to the Scope platform in years and you guys are falling behind. Sorry but that's what happens when you don't do anything or just offer a few good effects for an outrageous price. You should have charged for the platform instead of all these extra costs. I would rather pay $300 USD for a Cubase upgrade (especially since Cubase SX 4) than pay $300 and only get one module! I am not rich nor are many of the other Creamware users. I should have waited for this instead of getting the mastering package. Another thing is I don't like having to buy packages because I am forced to buy things I don't need or want and I wind up with duplicates and you say I can sell them but that is a nightmare. Mistakes are made, poor English leads to misunderstandings. Whatever you have to say about Steinberg, at least I can speak with someone who knows my language well.

" there hasn't been *any* development to the Scope platform in years and you guys are falling behind. "

To be honest thats not fair.

i wont comment on the cubase 4.1 synths and effects as i haven't tested them. but as far as that quote goes you seem to be missing a key point:

Commercial:

- Aderns Flexor III
- Spacef stuff
- DAS stuff
- Brainworx stuff
- John Bowen stuff
- Wolf stuff
- Dynatube
- Void/Cosm

And dont forget the HIGH QUALITY FREE STUFF from the likes of Shroomz, MCCY, hifiboom etc. Falling behind? Dude we're only getting started :)

And as far as i am aware of the routing is still unmatched and worth the price of a luna II alone.

"I would rather pay $300 USD for a Cubase upgrade (especially since Cubase SX 4) than pay $300 and only get one module!"

Who wouldn't. So its a good thing there arent many scope devices at $300, compared to the amount of stuff at the 99 euro mark. Not to mention all the freebees at commercial quality.

But of course, each to his own taste. Its about time Cubase users get something back for their $999. and maybe in the future it will even support ASIO (what a great beta testing team btw).

I was talking about the Scope platform. I thought I made that clear. The SFP that comes on the CD or that you download. Cubase won't even fit on a CD anymore.
They have gone to DVD as have many of the advanced VSTi programs. A lot of them use HD Streaming, Scope missed the boat in that area. A hybrid sampler/synthesizer would have been nice. Too many copies of existing outdated hardware and not enough original sounding modules. The VDAT isn't very sexy have you noticed? but I didn't even order that. It is something that came in a package. It's also cumbersome to use like you would expect from all Scope modules. Before I can even record, I have to create a tape and click in several other places. I have to use the remote 128 to sync to Cubase, yet another module to fiddle with. The sync ought to be automatic with no effort but you say it can't do that because Cubase is made by another company. That is not true. If only it had Rewire, everything is easy. Why does Scope not come with Rewire built into every module? Have you ever used Rewire? It is amazing for work flow. Scope doesn't play well with others. Instead of bragging that the SFP is better than Cubase, you should be working to integrate it. That would add value to it.

?

First of all im pretty sure Cubase fits twice on a cd. im even sure you wont find a single VSTi that wouldnt. Sampled content, however, is a whole other issue. The STS-5000 wouldnt be better if it was shipped on a dvd with 4.85 gigs of sampled content, would it? if im not totally wrong, Kontakt is like 5-10mb, while colossus is like 10 DVDs...

(former post was before you edited yours)

First of all i have never used vdat either so i cant comment on that one either.

"Too many copies of existing outdated hardware and not enough original sounding modules."

You allready mentioned flexor so i wont bring that up.

And to be honest, modelling existing equipment seem to be the main thing in vst/vsti world, doesnt it? Sonnox, Waves, ROMplers, Arturia hype etc?

Sure VST world have the odd experimental stuff like Absynth etc, as do scope have Solaris etc.

My Rewire experience is quite limited, i admit. I've used Reason rewired into Live for 10-20 hours, but thats it. I like the concept, but i couldnt do too much before the E6600 + 2gig ram started stuttering. This might very well be due to a shitty soundcard though.

And on that note i would just point out the obscurity of comparing a sequencer to a soundcard.
