RAM Timings 4 VSTi's

Post by dawman »

I have completely stopped using GS3 and have turned it into a super drum DAWg using LSAD, various percussion libraries, and lately Modular Scope Drum Kits, thank you very much Brotha' Man Shroomz II, and Wolf.

My personal synth DAW will be running software / hardware FX, and synths. But I am upgrading to a P35 based board and will be using a new LAA 3GB switch to allow addressing a larger area of RAM w/o making the 64bit jump. I was accessing app. 1.15GB's of RAM under XP, but this trick allows 2.6GB's of memory addressing out of a 4GB DIMM design. Since I have a VST shell using VSTi's that access the RAM and HDD's for their content. Would I be better off using CL3 low latency timings, or is the high speed of the FSB better suited?

I naturally would like both, as I could achieve this by dropping the multiplier down on the straps ( E6850 ) and still maintain the lower timings and faster access of the CL3 settings.

But what really makes the performance of the instruments kick ass, the CL3, or the 1940MHz of the quad pumped FSB?

The other forums I frequent are all claiming different sucess strategies, which comes as no surprise, but most of us here do not OC their CPU's, and seem to have a greater knowledge of cross application use. Which is exactly what I am doing, but incorporating hardware synths, sequencers, and FX much more.

Tightening ram timings is a known AMD strategy.

It looks like intels are more sensitive to FSB overclock. There are some useful figures posted here:

http://forum.nuendo.com/phpbb2/viewtopi ... fac3926a44

look at QX6700 figures, all are done with 5-5-5-15 ram timings. The biggest bump seems to come from FSB OC, ram OC naturally gives a bump, but not asmuch as FSB OC.

Some gamer OC'ers on intels (gathered from forums) insist that they could get enough juice with cheap PC5300 ram, but bumping FSB.

Logical conclusion would be that OC'd ram, coupled with tightened timings anf FSB OC would give the most performance bump. I can't dig the exact numbers, though. The link above is the closest match I know of.

Hey, Hey, Hey. Welcome to PlanetZ.

Your link is a great place to catch up on VSTi's and DAW's in general.

My Nuendo buddy might even like this. He's an OC'ng fool 4 sure.

I can't tweak my faithful DP965LT board, but have added 2GB's of PC2 6400 and now have the LAA 3GB RAM switch working. I can load some serious content now.

I am planning on upgrading to a DFI Blood Iron where I can tweak till my hearts desire. It seems as though the P35 and some CL3 OCZ Flex DIMM's will get me where I want to. These links were exactly what I was looking for.

Intel X48 boards sound like they will be where I need them next year, but I already have achieved most of my needs with the 3GB switch. It will probably be what I need for a couple of years.

DAW's seem to do the best with staying a year behind the newly released technologies.

Thank You Brotha' Man Bool.
