Best Setup?

Post by Jngaelin »

Hey guys.

Im seriously considering getting my self a dual CPU platform for my D.A.W.

Problem is i haven't been able to keep my self updated
about all the new "technical wonders" the past two years almost..
So i hardly now where to start.

Idea's about MOBO, CPU, HDD's and memory anyone?
And i still want to be able to use Windows XP with it.

Good thinking.

I have three cards so three PCI's would be preferable. :)

I ordered an ABIT IP35 Pro, it has 3PCI slots and the first one is quite far from the PCI-E video card.

Then I got E6750 cpu, 2gigs of DDR2 800 by Corsair and also ordered a POV 8600gt video card.

I hope for the end of next week to have it up and running. :)

That DAWg'll Hunt !

The BIOS in that board is sweet. I suggest adding voltage to your RAM and lower the timings to CL3. No effect on your CPU, GPU, or DSP's. It could be compared to kicking in some Nitrous to your gasoline.

If your RAM is stock at CL3 ( I believe it's CL4 ), then OC your FSB to 1500MHz. ( 375 x 4 ). My friend has that exact board on a Samplitude DAW, and the memory tweak smokes. Won't do anything for Scope, but if you have a VST sequencer, you should see an increase in the instances of VSTi's, and FX.

That CPU still has some headroom for OC'ng.

These guys around town here OC their rigs cause they do studio work, and it seems like the more instruments and FX you can load, the better. That applies to live performance also, but I always take it in the arse and buy the biggest CPU for the sake of stability. I wish I could trust a 300 USD CPU instead of using the 1000 USD kind, which I have to have in time for GaryB's arrival in late December.

Intel is very clever as they release the QX9650 first for 2 months for schmucks like me buy it, then the other 12MB L2cache models will follow for 500, 350, 275, and 200 USD. The latter three having much less L2 cache, and lower speeds as well.

Some day I will get to do this though. Maybe I can OC mine from 3.0GHz to 4.0GHz and use that CL3 DDRII RAM.

Now that DAWg'll HUNT !!

I am also a schlameal according to my family amd friends. Especially mein schatzie.

If I remember my polkas,..............Auf zeinna platz, mein schatz?

I used to sing these while playing the accordian when I was forced at gunpoint by my Grandfather to participate, and even had to wear the silly Lederhosen as well. I should scan some of my old black and whites and show a couple. All you can see is my head and feet, I was very young, probably 4-5 years old, circa 1961. Damn, I am a FAT old Bastard.

Those lessons really helped me though as I can play one hell of an Accordian on my 88's using the Michiel Post Accordian Library. Funny thing, when I play a Polka as fun thing, like the Man Show where evryone drinks beer live on TV, the people go nuts and sing and dance like there's no tomorrow. I have fallen in love with the American style of SW Louisianna cajun music called Zydeco. I often play a couple of tunes by Buckwheat Zydeco thatr really get people going. Variety is the spice of life, and right after playing one of these and going into a synth / jazz fusion piece is like throwing a Sandy Koufax curve on 'em.

I Love It So.

Hi :) Well... I guess you will have to read a lot, just as I did myself... In fact, please, go through this linke as I have done quite a research:

http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22972

Be patient is my best advice, because this is all you need to get a GREAT PC! Otherwise, you may mistake easily becuase the market today, is about 90% bigger than it uses to be about 7 or 8 years ago... There are tones of new products and of course, compatibility is a "strong" problem becuase of that.

The best way is reading as much as you can in an orderly way, particularly about MOBO, which is the most difficult thing to choose today. I mean, depending in what you want to do.

Alfonso, do you know if there's any differencies between the ABIT IP35 Pro and IP35-E?
The "E"-model costs only about 90euros here.
