gigabyte p35c-ds3r irq sharing in acpi mode
hi everyone
after reading the topic about nestor's quest for a new pc setup, i got the same mobo with him.after installing the 2 pulsar2 and xp , one of the cards is on irq 20 alone but the other one is on irq7, with intel ich9 smbus controller.i tried switching the slots but since there are only two left , i have not much options. So when i move to slot 3, it shares irq's again.i disabled the unused devices to free up some irq's but still no chance.do you think this will cause any problems?
should i insist on acpi or go back to standard mode?
any ideas?
thanks

Hi there… well, now we are brothers… he…
Look, I think that the sharing you’ll get there is not a big deal, as long as you don’t use the USB while recording or mixing your songs. The IRQ sharing comes most of all, from the “many” USB ports that are within the MOBO. In fact, there are 12 USB ports in all, 4 of them are conected and used, and it is more and less, what you’re going to need in a usual setup, the other 8 ones are potential connections. The 8 ports I’m talking about are not connected to any output, unless you have got the extra expansion USB card with 8 connectors that come for our MOBO, and that you have connected them, and are using other devices. I doubt seriously that this is the case, is it? Who on earth is using 12 USB ports at the same time!
I don’t think this sharing will cause you too much trouble…, of course, under the conditions I mention above of not using all those USB ports.
I have only one Pulsar card, so I installed it in the same slot you did for your first one, that is why it gave me the exact “IRQ 20” you have in yours.
I would recommend you to install the master card, into the slot not sharing IRQ with anything else anyway.
ACPI: I simply do not understand why people are still even talking about it! Please, do not misunderstand me, I’m not getting at you, (you’re my brother now
). I say so because it is extremely OBVIOUS that nobody should ever again use “Standard PC” with such new extraordinary MOBOs we get today! This is not something you need to think about. It is 95% better to use ACPI modes instate of Standard PC. Don’t waste your time on this point. Standard or ACPI PC was an issue in 1998-99, but it has been over for a long, long time…
I hope you can get it right soon. Please, keep in touch here, and tell us what happened, right? Cheers

yes, just disable the usb controllers that are shared with the card in the device manager. problem solved and you'll still have plenty of usb controllers left.
you could also just leave the card where it is. the SMBus controller won't make any problems(you can even disable it if you want to try that), although if the other slot is sharing with usb only, i'd choose that and disable the extra usb controllers....
theres no need to worry about which card is master. you SHOULD install in ACPI. most modern motherboards will function best that way.

hello again
after your suggestions i managed to get another irq free for the other card and
i think i finally got it going.the system seems stable for an hour
we did some guitar takes on an old project and nothing crazy occured.except that the new setup significantly outperforming the old one.this new mobo nestor brought up works pretty fine for now.with the correctly installed dual rams(i did the same mistake like nestor by installing the two in adjacent slots
) the machine works perfect.so my thanks go to him about that and also for helping me out here.and thanks gary b for the smbus tip.
cheers

hi there..
after having 5 sleeples nights, i can finally say that the system is up and woking again.
having solved the allkeys problem, i thought that all was ok...but no...suddenly cracks and pops emerged out of nowhere....
dsp load at 35%, cubase cpu load at 30%, ulli settings at 13 ms, irqs were ok, no conflicts, background services thing was done, adjusted for best performance, priorities were set correct, no gui activity problem, no noticable problem with the ulyssees analyzing, pci latency timings were good, cubase's set for lower latency was un-ticked, page file was set correct...
...but not on the right drive for my system.moving it to another drive did the job.now it's working as it should have.i'm so happy
(when was the last time i announced that?
)
i will post the first piece coming out of this setup as soon as possible as my brother Nestor told:)

Ups... well, there is not setup with minor problems when building a new system... But there it is your commitment to perfection and there you have, you've got it right

Hey, I forgot to tell you that the Express Recovery 2, that comes with our motherboard, is great. I is slow, it only works with one image at a time, and it works only in the very same drive you have your “C” partition. But what it does, it does well. If you do not have a imaging app and want to have a secure backup of your “C” partition, that’s a good option.

"we shall never surrender" that's right...and so shall the computers
still ,cilcks and pops start to happen after a while.i am curious about the usb ports sharing irqs with the 2nd pulsar2.one of them has the steinberg dongle and the other has the ups cable.i think i will go for another usb header on the board and get rid of the current hubs.
let's see what happens...
also the onboard lan, graphic card, 2 pci express root controllers are on the same irq..no 16..is it weird that so much devices sharing one irq?
if i can get the system going i will definitely use that pc express thing, because i do not have another back-up application ... thanks for the tip
