About my devices

Post by Shroomz~> »

Hi all,

Some of you may have noticed that several of the devices I've posted in the device forum here on PlanetZ in recent months have now been removed & are no longer available. I feel that I owe you all an explanation for this, so that you don't have to wonder what's going on. Basically what it comes down to is me making the decision based on what I know now, that the removed devices were & are not good enough for public consumption. This was based on the fact that most of the removed devices were built early on in my learning curve with the Scope SDK & It's now my opinion that they were not particularly well built. So, they are now no longer available. If I can find the spare time, I will possibly rebuild those devices, but there's no promise of that & even if I do rebuild any of them, they will most likely be significantly different devices. I hope you can all understand this & that the removal of a few crap devices doesn't offend anyone.

regards,
Shroomz

P.S. While I'm here, please take a look at the gear my brother sharc is selling in the purchasing forum here on PlanetZ. >>> http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23017

I Beg To Differ, :-?
Tube Strip is a vital component in my multiple destination module projects. For example the B2003 has it's own summed output to my rotary cabinet, the ASIO outs are always sampler outputs, and the synths must have Tube Strip as a final polishing before it's destination module.

If this is a " crappy " device, I cannot wait to see the new level of your standards. I think you are responsible for the " warmth revival " which overtook the threads here for 6 months.

I remember right after that really nasty Middle East thread of yore, where we all shared our fears, and hate so vividly, you changed the whole pace by returning with these awesome gifts. A remarkable contribution.

Tube Strip will remain on my synths outputs on both live DAW's until something better comes along, hopefully Tube Strip II, formerly known as Tube Strip.

Along With Others, I Consider You One Of The Most Valuable Members Of Planet Z.

BTW, Thanks to Brotha' Man Oteil formerly of the Allman Brothers Band, I have a dozen free tickets to my favorite festival in New Orleans on my BDay in 2008. You and Sharc can stay and go for free if you make it to the States, hopefully this is not a breach in your SDK agreement !!!

Glad to see that all your modular modules are still available. Nothing crappy about them at all! :D Thanks again for all your great work for the platform.

Hi there everyone,

I think perhaps I didn't explain enough of my reasoning for having removed some devices since I can see some speculation arising. So, here are some more specific details.

1. Although the removed devices might actually seem like some of my best work so far, they were actually built at a point when I had not even grasped the basic principles of properly constructing devices in the sdk. When I say 'properly constructing', I refer mainly to the fact that I made some very crucial mistakes (mistakes which are costly on device load times & resources used) in those earlier devices and they are not easily repairable without scrapping the device circuits and starting them again from scratch.

2. I want to make very high quality devices for our platform. The removed devices were not of a high enough standard (in my opinion). Please re-read point No.1 if you still don't know why.

3. I don't want users checking out one of my plugins for the first time to get a bad impression. Please re-read points 1&2 for further clarification of this point if need be.

4. I could not guarantee being able to afford the time to re-build these devices properly any time soon. Please re-read points 1,2&3.

Please re-read all 4 points.

regards,
S

PS. Thanks for the kind offer Scope4live! I can't see us having the funds though.

dear Shroomz (I&II),

perhaps I do understand you. I am a scientist, already for more than 25 years. In my line of business, you learn that every step you make has its imperfections, actually the best experiment you could do is the one showing that your previous findings or theories were not correct. But still, it is a wonderful line of work, because it leads to progress, and it inspires others.
Your devices, albeit imperfect, have been met with a lot of enthusiasm and support, and from my point of view (in fact, you can see it for yourself) have revived the work on devices, not only by yourself, but also by others. The devices section has perhaps become the most active one of the forum.
So, my take home message to you is: don't remove the devices, just because they are heavy on the processors. Add that info and let the user decide. If time permits and you are able to improve, we'll be all the more grateful!

Hat's off (chapeau) for you and Sharc

hi shroomz (all instances),

though I respect your decision to remove from the forum what you consider lacking the quality standard you set for yourself, I'd like to know if you'd grant the permission to share those devices with people asking for them in the corresponding topic.
see, I have a remarkable colloection of (I hope) most devices issued here, especially after I joined the forum, and almost every instance/revision of those released this year. I don't intend to set up a public archive (although I had all the possibilities), but I could imagine to search my drives for a gone treasures, if someone lost it.
but I would like to have your clear and explicit permission for that. if you say no, then it's no.

:D the class shroomz should be defined: shroomz.device.modular and shroomz.device.synth shroomz.device.effect.
that reads like a newsgroup structure, too :)

Kylie, I have absolutely no issue with yourself or anyone else distributing the removed plugs free of charge. That's fine by me, no worries. However.... it might be a good idea to suggest to people to contact me via PM first to check if I have an updated version of any of them. Either way, do completely as you wish with my plugs as long as it's free of charge.

I meant to say also... Ben, there's no chance I'd remove the modular modules even if they aren't so great. Not after yourself & Roy have spent time & been kind enough to display them on both of your modular sites. Thanks to both of you for that.

1) suggesting to contact you concerning the removed ones was something I had in mind, but as last option :) . you probably prefer making devices over answering requests for the old stuff you try to forget about. that's work that can be done by the forum members. you can put your effort into reworking them :)
2) I had the vision you might tell about an updated version yourself and re-upload it. I just didn't expect you to silently rework the devices without telling anybody...
3) free of charge is the way this game is meant to be played, isn't it? :)

thanks for your permission anyway, and for what you've created.

Hi Kylie :)

straight to your points >>>

1. Cool, that sounds about right to me.
2. You had the right vision, but there might be beta versions to try behind the scenes before actual releases if anyone is interested.
3. Yes indeed. I must say though... when I look at some of the high quality devices made by MCCY like 'MUBACO' & 'MOVEQ+' which he spent huge amounts of time developing it does make me wonder. That's a guy who IS making high quality devices and not only the 2 I've mentioned.

cheers :)

lol, did something like that few years ago :-)

Now, you leave and remove your devs just when I am about to release the FAT and when it is forecasted to be raining mixers all over the place... tsss, ask to Jimmy (Scope4live@night&days), but your tube drive stuff seemed to work fine for a pro user like him....anyway... good luck (and yes, you gonna have some spare time now, for real life stuff ;-)

well, the SDK is powerful, but it has of course a disadvantage if one wants to gain profit from it: the NDA. but I think that's not what martin is after, neither are you, so it's up to everybody to decide whether having fun to develop is the profit to aim for, or not. well, the choice is somewhat limited since there are no pro developer licences to get somewhere out there (afaik), so you and martin and all the others are bound to do it for the endless glory :D

I Might Have Something Intersting Then,
I believe the 3 DP boards I bought in my first Scope DAW are mine to use as I wish. I will find out from Ralf tomorrow.

I still have many of the devices made by the original owner. He claimed to have worked for the stars, I tend to believe him as his devices are incredible, but he was such an arrogant ass, I had management reomove him, for his own safety.

I would love to sell these cards and their software, as moving them around the way I do gigs, will eventually lead to their demise. Perhaps I can find another talented SDK guy to give them a home. This person might have a dual license agreement, where he can sell, as well as share.

I Shall Find Out The Details Next Week,

well, I think even with the free sdk someone could sell a device if he gets in contact with soniccore and make a deal/contract.

I think they make the sdk free to make the platform more attractive, but they may also want to prevent people to sell worse quality plug-ins or just everything that appears... :)
