Any thoughts on the Dell XPS TM M1210 laptop?

Hi,

A bit off topic here:

Any thoughts on the Dell XPS TM M1210 laptop? It has a 12 inch screen ( I want something small for that extra portability). Though do you think it is too small?

Other specs include: Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobiele Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T5500 (1.66GHz, 2MB Cache, 667MHz FSB), XP Home edition (is that good enough? Though I would like to upgrade to XP Pro). I could get Media centre though I dunno about that. Is Media Centre ok for music apps? Shouls I hold out for Vista? 1024MB DDR2 533MHz RAM, 120GB SATA (5400rpm) Hard drive, integrated Intel® GMA 950 graphic card, 8x DVD+RW Drive.

Any input and thoughts would be very welcome. What are Dells like in general? Is it worth getting extra insurance? Are they robust enough? Etc......

PS. I forgot to mention the price is around 1100 Euros.

You would really need to try them out first. Be sure to check it has Texas Instrument firewire & CardBus chips.

Hi,

Dell usually use TI components in their notebooks, as in my precision m70. about reliability, i dropped mine twice (1meter)

and it still works fine (touch wood). nevertheless, if you're a bit clumsy, the insurance is always a good thing

I would stay at xp and if you have the option for a faster hd, go for it

I've never owned a Dell but I would *never* get one, based purely on the opinions and experience of friends and colleagues. They're generally considered stuffed with crapware and undocumented components, and are notorious for having compatibility issues. Heck, even my favorite online computer shop has a special page just for Dell users warning about potential technical issues.

to the dell technical issues. i'm the it responsible in my company. we have
20 users with dell latitude or dell precision notebooks. i know that
the former "home" models (inspiron) had lots of problems, but have no
exp. for those models...

technical faults occured for our 20 notebooks:
- 1 motherboard
- 1 RAM
- some battery replacements obviously, thanks to sony

i think this is not that bad. nevertheless the overall look and feel could be
better, also the driver management is indeed a mess (there's no auto-
update for drivers like other manufacturers have).

Some of the newer Dell's come with Ricoh CardBus controllers.
