Creamware Six String vs. Current Guitar Plug Ins
Hey, I'm looking for a good hard rock guitar modeler for select Power Chord and other Rock elements to my otherwise non-rock sounding music. Is the Creamware Six String the way to go for us Scope users or are the current Guitar Plug Ins further ahead? Any recomendations would be great! Also if there are examples that are posted in the music section of Planet Z that you guys have made, or know of that use Six String, please post a link. Thanks!
I've been using sampled distorted leads since the Ensoniq Mirage, and Emulator days. Six String is cool, but for rock edge there are thousands of good Akai, and EMU discs out there. I recently bought VSL Distorted Guitars, and it does have some great power chord stuff, but I still like the lo-fi Akai, EMU stuff for leads. Especially the ones w/ feedback on the mod wheel type. Run a few through STS w/ Scope FX. Bet you'll find one in there somewhere.
Six String has a big advantage over samples, it's a modeling synth and gives control and variability on various elements of the sound, so it's not static, it's warmer and more credible.
It can also be used to getting extreme models of unexisting sounds, in that sense it's a fantastic synth with a different sound from VA, FM or wavetable.
I love it.

Sixstring IS of course the most versatile solution, but (for example and afaik) the stabbed riff on Snap's I've got the Power is a preset from a $100 sound module...On 2006-03-13 21:51, DJ Mosley wrote:

I've tested guitar amp sims with DX7 sounds myself and they DID sound great.
On the other hand you WILL hear the NI stuff (as mentioned in another guitar fx thread) on literally thousands of productions soon - with SFP devices like Sixstring it may be more easy to deviate - in the positive sense

cheers, Tom
Don’t want to steer you away from Six String which looks like an interesting emulation but if you're considering samples you might also want to look at the Monzter Guitars sample set from http://www.precisionsound.net . Volume 1 is on sale atm for $29 and you’ll also get a discount on the upcoming volume 2.
Here’s a demo of Vol. 1:

and here’s one of the upcoming Vol. 2:

Sorry to come off as a sales rep for Precisionsound - I’m not affiliated with the company, just a satisfied customer.
There’s also the Distorted library from http://www.getdistorted.com . I haven’t used it myself but there are some demos at http://store.cellarroom.de that sound pretty good.

I pull off Mahavisnu Orchestra guitar, and violin sounds with VSL Distorted Guitar DVD, and GigaViolin with no sweat. But Six String does an awesome rhythm guitar emulation due to it's awesome string model. The dynamics with a little tube distortion are quite convincing. I have been doing alot of guitar stuff 4 my new dance gig lately, and when switching between leads w/ feedback, and rhythms with Six String it is most convincing. But since I am a guitar player it helps to know the voicings and limitations of keyboards doing guitars. I wouldn't think of trying slide or pedal steel, as they must be real guitars 4 that IMHO. But I have sequenced pedal steel attempts using Vintaudio Clean Guitar DVD. You just have to have working knowledge of the e and c6 pedal steel to pull it off. But I would rather have the pedal steel player from Poco going through his leslie than bluffing my way through that emulation.
