In mastering circles, if a device is too cheap, it's not taken seriously at all. This is because professional engineers are intelligent enough to know that good components/algorithms simply cost money. You can't hire someone to write good algorithms and then sell the result for the price of a Synthedit synth or give it away for free.

Actually for a mastering EQ, this device is very cheap. Compare it to the high end Sonic Timeworks CPU-based EQ:

Massenburg and other TDM mastering EQ plugins cost way way more.

So really I don't think there's any need to moan about the price on this one

Shroomz - I think CW takes around 25%. Sure this is a fair chunk but actually for distributor costs (the CW shop effectively distributes the plugins, handles CC payments etc) it's very cheap. For a software company to get a boxed software product into stores, they supply it to distributors at around 30-50% of the retail price, if they're lucky. In many cases they have to take a lot less.

Yeah I hear ya... however if this device *is* really good, and can compete with $8000 devices, I don't see why mastering engineers wouldn't buy a Scope card just for this plugin. The cost of the card + the plugin is still much less than most other solutions.

Actually this kind of thing is not uncommon. There were some pretty epic threads on KVR in the last few months regarding mastering EQ plugins from this company:

(this one costs $1000).

I think he ended up giving a limited version (much fewer bands) away for free or something.

The thing about mastering is that it is a highly skilled activity.

I'm not implying that people here don't have the ability to do it!

It's just that if you do, you can charge enough money for it to make back the cost of your expensive tools pretty quickly. I don't think *any* company that makes mastering devices expects them to sell huge amounts - this is a very different market to, say, a synth or track-FX plugin. And because the tools for such activities are by definition expensive, if you bring something out which is too cheap (I'd say that $600 is too cheap!) people in the pro community simply do not take it seriously.

concerning the price, there's always an introductory price before the final price, hopefully creamware will keep that policy.
Considering the complexity of the device, introductory price should be 200 at least,

Try bargaining at the Record Plant in SF for the use of an SSL or NEVE, just tell them you only need 10 bands of the EQ. I prefer the maximum bandwidth when it comes to finalising your mix. This price is justified only by the quality. I hope to use it on my studio box, and not my live rig. So when I read about the quality of the device from fellow pulsarians, then I will decide. Most of the guys who engineer on this forum are well versed in production, so as usual I will trust their judgement, and let all the wining slide about the price. Hey if you can sell and market your productions because they sound better, and you have more precise control of your sound manipulating,it seems worth the asking price. Besides, we are not communists. I know if I think the quality is lacking, I will use it on my live rig, in front of less demanding clients.

To those who complain about the price....Go get a price on third party mastering for a complete CD. And you'll get what you pay for.

I'm grateful it's available even if I can't justify it yet. Those who need it will find the $$ and buy it.
