Sam that's great news, I'll probably buy the Gigabyte myself. If you have time, maybe you can do a test playing back a reasonably heavy project, and see if you get any glitches - try moving windows around and generally try to break it  (not a very scientific test I know  )

I've tried this with many recent motherboards, and they've failed miserably (glitches especially when switching windows, moving things around etc), while my Pentium M laptop with Magma chassis is rock-solid.

Well, with the same amount of RAM and a wider bus, I'm able to throw over 30 ASIO tracks on top of what overflowed my laptop as well as a couple of P100s and an echo3 or two for good measure.

I think the 'sticky video' thing (no not that kind of ... --get your mind out gutter!) has to do with the way the Dell --well, mine anyway, stacks the IRQs. My USB ports, video chipset, and Cardbus controller; e.g. my CWA cards, were all on the same IRQ. So if a lot was going on, then trying to change focus between apps and windows would cause an I/O traffic jam.

The Gigabyte however doesn't enforce shared IRQs across the bus, and allows you to manually set them per PCI slot in the BIOS. Having said that, the settings I used were summarily ignored by Windows, but Windows resource selection wasn't awful.

I'll have plenty of upgrade time before I have to worry about jimmying with the PCI slot placement and all of that.

In fact the only slow-down I have thus far experienced was when I loaded an 8-layer Bosendorfer patch which used to just drop out in an unusable way on the previous rig. Now, after warning that my RAM is pretty damn low, it plays perfectly, but Windows is a little sluggish as it has far less elbow room with which to flush and fill the memory.

Incidentally, spend the extra $5 and get the Venice core. Aside from the Intel extensions and scalability, it runs VERY cool. As a result, I can barely hear the collective computer fans over muffled street traffic (which I hadn't previously been able to single out). Yes, --once booted, it's quieter than the laptop and Magma chassis.

Hope that helps.

Sam
